Reporter Extra: How Chief Justice John Roberts spent his career fighting the Voting Rights Act
The Supreme Court’s decision in Louisiana v. Callais dealt a mortal blow to a longstanding pillar of the Voting Rights Act. The vote came down to party lines, with all the conservative justices siding 6-3 against the liberal justices. But one conservative justice in particular, Chief Justice John Roberts, has been playing the long game when it comes to dismantling the Voting Rights Act. Roberts’s beef with the VRA goes all the way back to his time as a young staffer in the Reagan administration, and he’s chipped away at it through his tenure as chief justice.
