Proteus was a new engine that had come to the Island of Sodor from a faraway place. His purpose? To relieve a battered and weary Rheneas and Skarloey after many years of running their railway alone.
Unfortunately, his stay didn't last long. After a visit to the quarry, some twisted rails on the Iron Bridge sent Proteus and his crew plunging to their doom. But that wasn't the end of the little yellow engine's story.
Proteus has reappeared countless times (and in many different times) as a ghost, and sometimes more. To our knowledge he is the only engine that has found a direct link from the world of the living, and a place called Nowhere: a place engines and people have found themselves trapped in for some time.
Proteus has found the secret of traveling between these two worlds quite easily, and has gone back to Sodor to keep a watchful eye and also influence certain events. One might never know when Proteus is watching, because he could either be hiding as a cheeky specter or taking on one of his many protean forms. You might think you've been following one character in a story when in reality it has been Proteus all along.
In the upcoming project, Nowhere, we follow Patriot the former Big City Engine as he discovers the way to break free of his double-buffered dead end on a quest to find answers on how to return to Island of Sodor; answers that will surely lead us to Proteus the Ghost Engine.
NOTE: Proteus' dive in the tidal pool portal was so epic (and let me tell you, it took a few tries. You'll see the failed attempts in some B Roll Videos!) but there are elements to this sequence that will be reworked. Proteus might not travel underwater, but there will be another direct link from the Nowhere to Sodor that Proteus has mastered with ease.
