So I did some research of my own! And I have come to the conclusion that he is a Five-Lined Skink!🦎
There are only 4 species of Skinks in the state of Maryland, where I live. 2 look nothing like him, and the remaining 2 are the Broadhead Skinks, and the Five-Lined Skink.
The Broadhead Skink obviously has a much wider head than Reggie, and they are also much bigger and more vibrantly colored. But Five-Lined Skinks, as adult males, are 5-8 inches long - Check✅. Are tan/brown with faded lines along their backs - Check✅. And during breeding season, which begins in May, they have a reddish/orangish color around their jaw and neck. And even though it’s only April, Reggie has that rusty color around the bottom of his head! Check✅!
Eventually, he skidaddled off my porch and it looks like he lives underneath it! So hopefully this won’t be our last time seeing him! Five-Lined Skinks, like other similar reptiles, eat insects and spiders. So hopefully he keeps those 8-Legged freaks the FAWK outta my house. Because in case y’all didn’t know, I am SUPER arachnophobic. Call me an Athena kid.😂🕷️
