Getting invited to the movies by Amy had been one hell of a surprise. A welcome one, Taylor had quickly decided, to be sure, but a surprise all the same. Though she’d felt a bit of shame as well, because the tone of the texts that had formed the invitation -though how much of a ‘request’ it had been, rather than a politely worded command, was a matter of great debate- had made it clear that Amy was more than a little off-put by the fact that Taylor hadn’t asked her out first.
Which she should have, if only to see how compatible they were. Taking a girl out for a night on the Boardwalk was really only the right thing to do after you dragged her into a dungeon -if accidentally- and ended up giving her a spanking at the end. And as fond of as Taylor had found herself of Paige -and as utterly gorgeous as she had found both Paige and Sabah-, she had met Amy first and there was something of a connection between the two of them. A connection that needed to be explored, and so she had to plan a date.
But before she planned a date, she had to deal with a few other things. Like checking her Monster Hunter’s Online Account, because she’d be damned if she wasn’t morbidly curious to see what people were saying online about everything that had happened. Not to mention that there were…questions that she wanted to put out there, statements that she wanted to make, and ones that she didn’t want connected to her current account either.
Which was why she’d made a new one, one based on the ancient beliefs of her Irish ancestors and her new raven summons.
Morrigan.
Goddess of Fate, of Death and of War, accompanied everywhere by her crow servants.
And, granted, her ravens weren’t quite crows, and ravens might fit better to Norse myth, but ravens and crows were very closely related, and that was good enough for her.
Anyway, the point was, now she could involve herself a bit more in MHO without having to deal with bullshit and nonsense being slung her way like normal. So, paging through the current ‘hot threads’, she opened several and settled down to read.

♦ Topic: Double Dungeon Incident (Brockton Bay)In: Boards ► Hunts ► Gates ► American ► East Coast ► New England ► Brockton BayMiss Mercury (Original Poster) (Protectorate Employee)Posted On Jan 1st 2011:FROM THE OFFICE OF THE DIRECTORPROTECTORATE BRANCH EAST-NORTH-EASTApproximately twenty-four hours ago, a Protectorate strike team was deployed in response to an emergency aid request by Hunter Robin Swoyle, whose strike team were clearing a D-rank dungeon in the suburbs of Brockton Bay.When the Protectorate team arrived, they found many members of Hunter Swoyle's team badly injured, and were informed that a double-dungeon incident was underway, with statue-type magic beasts of A to S rank having engaged the party and killed several members, injuring the survivors. They were further informed that Hunter Taylor Hebert had remained behind to allow the rest of the party to escape the double dungeon, and that she needed immediate assistance. Further response teams arrived, and the larger force immediately entered the primary dungeon and sought out the entrance to the secondary. The entrance was not located, nor were the statue-type magical beasts found. However, the Protectorate team found the bodies of the Hunters that had been reported deceased, with the unconscious Hunter Hebert, at the end of a dead-end tunnel. The deceased and Hunter Hebert were evacuated from the dungeon, the gate of which immediately thereafter closed.Investigations are ongoing, and will not be commented on outside of official statements. Please show due respect to the families of the deceased Hunters.Hunter Hebert remains unresponsive in Brockton Bay Memorial Hospital, however her prognosis is stated to be positive, and it is believed she will recover.

►CassandraOfRohan (Verified Hunter) (Teutonic Knights)Replied On Jan 1st 2011:@WatcherInTheWallsIt was hell, is what it was.@ScalebornShieldI don't know. The second dungeon was short, really short. We reached the final room not even ten minutes after we started into it, maybe less?It was just a big stone circular room. Big altar in the middle, huge statues around the edge of the room. One huge statue on a throne at the far end. A woman, wearing a circlet.Once we were inside, all these torches lit up.It was creepy, and weird, but nothing happened until the first person turned around and tried to leave. The woman's eyes shot some kind of fire-beam spell at him and he was just...gone.Didn't even have time to scream.Taylor...she saw some sort of tablet that the woman was holding in her lap. I don't know what it said, I didn't see it, but I guess it was riddles of some kind.Commandments that we had to follow to survive. She figured them out, but not everyone was willing to listen to her. Those that didn't, died. Instantly.Even the tanks or those with shielding spells. Didn't matter.Taylor lost an arm, then a leg, pushing people to safety when the statues attacked us.Then...well, I already told you how it ended. And that's all I know, and all I'm going to say.Well, besides this: if you read this Taylor, I owe you. You saved my life, and I’m sorry I almost got you killed.

Cassie…Taylor had been surprised to see her shut down the way that she had in the dungeon, experienced Hunter that she was, but in hindsight maybe it wasn’t all that surprising after all. It was hard to keep your cool when you were confronted by an enemy that you not only couldn’t kill, but couldn’t even meaningfully harm. Cassie was brave, she knew that the other girl was brave. She’d seen Cassie stand and fight in plenty of tough situations before, without wavering so much as an inch. Frankly, the other girl was strong-spirited enough that Taylor thought she would have made a far better tank than a mage, when it came to personality.
The only reason Taylor had kept her head was because she was resigned to death, and cared far more about getting her comrades -some of whom she continued friendly acquaintances, if not friends outright- to safety than she did about saving her own life. Especially once she’d lost her arm.
That being said, she made a note to look the other girl up some time, let her know that she didn’t hold it against her. Because what had happened had been, in no way whatsoever, Cassie’s fault. It hadn’t been anyone’s fault, really, because how could anyone have predicted that the second dungeon would be so insanely dangerous as it was?
She grimaced faintly, well aware of the fact that it was only due to the influence of the System that she wasn’t trying to blame herself. Her stats were high enough, now -boosted by the couple of levels she’d gained from dealing with that dungeon break- that she had the Wisdom and Intelligence required to accept that her casting of the final vote didn’t make the situation her fault.
It hadn't been anyone's fault, she repeated firmly to herself. Not Swoyle's for taking the contract. Not Cassie's for freezing. Not the people who'd panicked and refused to listen to her and gotten themselves killed. They'd been terrified, all of them, and fear made people do stupid things. She knew that better than most, and she damn well wasn’t going to judge anyone for it.
She scrolled through a few mroe pages of the thread, skimming replies without reading most of them. The usual mix of well-wishers, armchair tacticians who'd never set foot in a dungeon above E-rank (if they’d ever set foot into one at all), and a handful of conspiracy theorists who were convinced the Protectorate was covering something up.
Which they were, kind of. Just nothing that any of the conspiracy theorists were spouting.
At any rate, there was nothing worth engaging with, and certainly nothing worth engaging with under her new account. She didn't need Morrigan's first post being in a thread directly related to Taylor Hebert. There was no sense in borrowing potential trouble when it could be easily avoided instead. So her mouse moved, the page vanished, and the next thread loaded in.

♦ Topic: Double Dungeons and Their Increasing FrequencyIn: Boards ► Hunts ► Gates ► GeneralAverageAlexandros (Original Poster) (Hunter Husband)Posted On Jan 1st 2011:So, in response to the latest Double Dungeon incident in Brockton Bay, I thought I'd start up a thread about Double Dungeons, their increasing frequency, the implications and the consequences, and -perhaps most importantly- brainstorming ideas on how to help people survive them. We might not be the top guilds, but I'm sure if we all put our heads together, we can come up with something!God knows I'd love for my wife to have a guide-book or a strategy to keep her safe if she ever ends up encountering one.

►ScaleborneShield (Verified Awakened)Replied On Jan 1st 2011:So, hunter fanboy here, what exactly is a Double Dungeon, obviously besides the most blatant part being two dungeons?
►ClericalCrystal (Verified Hunter)Replied On Jan 1st 2011:@ScaleborneShieldThey used to be pretty uncommon, downright rare in fact, but basically what it means is that there is a second, complete dungeon inside of the first. Traditionally, they're of the same ranking as the primary dungeon, but also have between two and three times the amount of rewards -like Mana Crystals and the like- of the primary dungeon. It's usually like finding a gold mine. The only problem is, you have a limited time to clear them before the gate closes after the primary dungeon's boss is killed, and that means people take stupid risks and push for speed over being careful.Which especially dangerous when the group is already tired and injured from clearing the primary dungeon.
►ScaleborneShield (Verified Awakened)Replied On Jan 1st 2011:So they only show up after the primary is cleared or are they there the entire time? As for the risks, can't say I probably wouldn't do the same, if it was with a trusted group but still multiplying your loot like that is insane. I'm going to do some research on these, see what is posted.
►ClericalCrystal (Verified Hunter)Replied On Jan 1st 2011:@ScaleborneShieldNo one really knows. The entrance is always in the boss room, usually on the far side of the boss from the entrance to the boss room itself. No one's ever been able to sneak around enough to find a double dungeon without killing the boss of the first dungeon first. So whether killing the boss creates the entrance, reveals the entrance, or if it's there but no one can reach it until the boss dies, who's to say?It can definitely be highly rewarding, but I would definitely do more research as well.
►Reave (Protectorate Employee) (Verified Awakened)Replied On Jan 1st 2011:From what data on them that the Protectorate has been able to gather indicates, Double Dungeons are more common at lower tiers, and tend to be found in gates that form in larger cities. While @ClericalCrystal is right about the enhanced rewards, she's also right about the enhanced danger. More than a few raid parties have lost people, or even the entire raid, by staying in a double dungeon too long or by trying to clear it too quickly. The Protectorate recommends that non-guild groups do not attempt to clear a double dungeon, and further suggests that such clearance attempts are only performed by raid groups where the entire group is at least two rankings above the dungeon tier.
►AntigoneReplied On Jan 1st 2011:@Reave and we really have no idea why they're happening more often?
►Reave (Protectorate Employee) (Verified Awakened)Replied On Jan 1st 2011:@Antingone There are studies and investigations that have been underway, but there isn't anything definitive yet.

There wasn’t much of interest beyond that, she decided pretty quickly as she went through the pages. It mostly all boiled down to the fact that no one knew anything about anything, everyone was speculating about everything, and the usual suspects were throwing shade at the Protectorate for their ‘ignorance’. As if anyone knew jack-shit about gates, how they worked, where they took raiders, or anything else of use. Dungeons, and just about everything related to them, were an unsolved mystery that defied all human attempts to solve them.
No one knew why they formed, where they went, where the monsters were from or why they existed. Was it alternate dimensions, parallel worlds, other planets? The number of theories abounded, all of which had very…dedicated supporters and detractors, all of which had arguments for and against them -of varying quality and reasonableness, to say the very least- but without definitive answers theories is all that they were. And the likelihood that definitive answers would ever be found was small, and getting smaller with every answerless year that passed.
After all, it was pretty damn difficult to research a phenomena when it would either vanish if defeated, or release city-eradicating monsters if it wasn’t defeated for a week.
People would keep trying, of course, humanity didn’t have a choice but to spend as much time as possible gathering whatever scraps of information that they could in the hopes that putting all of it together would eventually provide the answers that they’d been seeking for decades. Hope sprung eternal, after all, but in the meantime, Hunters would keep dying, the Protectorate and it’s sibling organizations would keep issuing warnings that everyone would ignore or pay lip service to, and the cycle would continue until either humanity broke the code behind the gates, or the gates broke humanity.
On that cheerful note, she moved on to the next, a thread about her ending the dungeon break that had interrupted her shopping trip with Paige. Which was, she noted with a faint blush, mostly down to people thirsting after her and waxing eloquent on her body. Specifically, most of them seemed to be very focused on how good what she had been wearing made her butt and her legs look, though no small amount of attention had been paid to her tits as well. Which was all very flattering, but she’d really rather that people focused on the more heroic aspects of the day, like ending the dungeon break.
Though she had to admit, the clothes that Sabah and Paige had stuck her in -and on such short notice, at that- really did flatter her quite nicely.
She scrolled past a particularly detailed breakdown of her outfit that someone had screenshotted from a bystander's video, complete with annotations and arrows pointing to various features of the ensemble, and decided that she was pretty done with this particular thread. Flattering or not, there was only so much time a girl could spend reading strangers' opinions about her ass before it started to get weird.
The next thread was not anywhere near as light-hearted and uplifting.

♦ Topic: Underage Hunters and Their SafetyIn: Boards ► Hunting ► GeneralWhitecollar (Original Poster) (Hunter Wife)Posted On Jan 1st 2011:I wanted to make this thread to start a discussion about what we can do to improve the safety of underage Hunters. I'm pregnant, and as worried as I am for my husband when he goes into dungeons, I'm terrified that my baby will suffer through the same experience that just occurred in Brockton Bay with that Double Dungeon incident.Multiple Hunters killed, including one underage girl, and the rest -including several more underage Hunters- only escaped alive because yet another underage Hunter stayed behind to sacrifice herself.I don't think Hunting should be legal for anyone under the age of twenty-one. If you're not old enough to drink or own a gun, you're not old enough to fight monsters inside of gates!
(Showing page 1 of 10)
►ScaleborneShield (Verified Awakened)Replied On Jan 1st 2011:Easy for you to say. I have a part time job trying to help my family stay ahead of things, and while I'm definitely not able to drink or own a gun, I know that if I were to become a hunter I would sign up to participate in dungeons. I've seen the videos and reports on dungeon breaks, the monsters don't care how old someone is and they definitely don't care if they're a hunter or not. So unless you're saying that every time a dungeon is formed you want everyone under 21 to be evacuated, think about reality and what families will do to support each other. If you said something like trying to find better ways to detect dungeon power and changes, I'd agree with you. If it was a general standard for hunters to be able to enter a dungeon that is equal across the ranks, I'd ask more questions about the standards. But it seems like you're only going "think of the children" and nothing else.
►WatcherInTheWallsReplied On Jan 1st 2011:So...this might be odd or maybe it'a already here on a smaller scale....but why not set up traiining camps of a sort like the guilds do...offer courses /training for kids that are still growing into their power.Raise their foundation, so they become better Hunters later on. And set a standard for every dungeon rank? Something.Hunters can still hone their skills and get better, experience counts.....better to allow rookies to have a better foundation to their skills from ACTUALLY training and facing things.Perhaps the bigger guilds could spare people to do "Guided training courses in D-rank dungeons? They can still make some money - which is where it often starts....Personally. I'd rather go hunting in a low rank dungeon than sit behind my desk all day....

Taylor rolled her eyes hard enough that it hurt as she shut that tab as well. She could understand where Whitecollar was coming from, she supposed, at least from an emotional and intellectual standpoint. But, like ScaleborneShield had said, it was hard to make a living without Hunting in the modern world. Not to mention the fact that being Awakened and not doing something with your abilities was uncomfortable, to say the very least. If you were Talented, it was even worse. Like ants crawling beneath your skin.
And she didn’t even need to read anymore of the pages, either, because she already knew what it would all say. Every time something bad went down with Hunting, especially if underage Hunters were involved, people came out of the woodwork to demand that something different be done without ever providing an answer as to what the ‘different’ could actually be.
Frankly, it was a bit of a concession -as much as saying so would only rile people up- that the world governments had all agreed to ban underage Hunters from entering any gates above D-rank anyway, regardless of the Hunter’s rank. Sure, not every country actually followed through, but most did, and that meant a lot of powerful Hunters like her sister were being kept on the sidelines until they turned eighteen. It was a hell of a handicap to voluntarily take on, given the danger posed by gates and dungeon breaks, and sometimes it was a handicap that backfired.
After all, the result was that, often times, larger groups of weaker adults were sent to deal with gates that a smaller number of more powerful Hunters could have dealt with, if it wasn’t for the fact that the aforementioned Hunters were underage. At the same time, people her age were impulsive, easily distracted, frequently stupid, and tended to let their emotions dictate their actions more often and more powerfully than most adults did. None of which was a great thing to have on a Hunt. She’d seen plenty of idiots get injured because they were too busy showing off to someone that they found attractive, or to their friends and rivals, after all.
Which, now that she thought about it, is something that she’d probably have to deal with now. She was now, after all, not-entirely-unattractive.
That was going to get annoying very, very quickly, she had no doubt about that. She wasn’t remotely interested in having to deal with a bunch of horny, smooth-brained idiots getting themselves killed or maimed because they were too busy trying to impress her to focus on the damn dungeon. Maybe she could try to build her own team, using the Party System. It would help keep things under her control, and it would help keep everyone safer as well, what with the benefits that the System provided.
Of course, she’d need to either convince her parents to let her start Hunting again, something that they were clearly attempting to put off allowing until Rose was home to help them convince her to give up -whether until she turned 18 or entirely, she didn’t know-, or she would need to find a way to go on Hunts without her parents knowing about it. Something that would not be easy, because even Hunters that wanted to use an Alias had to register their real names and ages with the Protectorate for the sake of…well, keeping underage Hunters from getting themselves killed sneaking around behind a mask, and making sure that next of kin could be notified when an Alias Hunter was killed or injured.
Which was why she’d started a couple of threads on her own, one about Alias Hunting and one about a change in Talents.
The latter was the first one she’d made, and the one she’d had to word most carefully. She didn’t want to just go around mentioning the System publicly, after all, since she didn’t doubt that it could end pretty poorly if she did. Instead, she’d framed it a little differently.

♦ Topic: Can Talents Change? In: Boards ► Awakened ► General Discussion ► Q & AMorrigan (Original Poster) (Verified Hunter)Posted On Jan 1st 2011:Does anyone know if it's particularly common for your Talent to change? I went on a raid recently, and while I was inside the raid my summons changed their form and gained additional abilities. Has this happened to anyone else?
(Showing page 1 of 1)
►ClericalCrystal (Verified Hunter)Replied On Jan 1st 2011:I've never heard of it happening personally, but given that Second Awakenings are a thing I wouldn't be surprised if a Talent could evolve like that. It's still basically the same, right?
►Morrigan (Original Poster) (Verified Hunter)Replied On Jan 1st 2011:I mean, I guess so? It's always been a scouting-type Talent based around summons, it still is. They just went from being ground-based to being able to fly, and their shape changed a little.
►ClericalCrystal (Verified Hunter)Replied On Jan 1st 2011:Well, you might be some kind of trend-setter, then. I'm sure you're not the only one it's happened to, but maybe the changes are less noticeable for other people? Most people don't have summons, after all.Anyone from the Protectorate or a big guild able to weight in here?
►MamaBear (Verified Hunter) (Independent Hunter)Replied On Jan 1st 2011:Back when I was in a guild, one of our guildmates went through a Second Awakening in an A-rank dungeon, but it took months for anyone to notice because the difference between her old Talent and her new one was so miniscule. It was actually an Independent that caught it after joining us for the first time in a year. A kind of 'outside looking in' thing.
►Reave (Protectorate Employee) (Verified Awakened)Replied On Jan 1st 2011:It's definitely happened before, but it's incredibly uncommon. I think that the Protectorate has confirmed less than a hundred times something like that has happened, nationwide? Obviously it could have happened more often than that and simply never been reported, but even if we were generous and doubled the reported amount, it's still a tiny fraction of the population.
►Morrigan (Original Poster) (Verified Hunter)Replied On Jan 1st 2011:So the basic idea is that it happens, but it's really rare. I guess it's too much to hope that there's some sort of, like, compendium or manual to look at? A research paper, even?I'll take literally anything that you can give me.
►Reave (Protectorate Employee) (Verified Awakened)Replied On Jan 1st 2011:Sorry, nothing that's really ready for public consumption. Talents are unique enough that they'd probably identify whose experienced it, and unless we have explicit permission, we can't allow that. Believe it or not, being Awakened, Talented, or experiencing a Second Awakening actually all qualify for HIPPA protections!
►Morrigan (Original Poster) (Verified Hunter)Replied On Jan 1st 2011:I wouldn't have thought that on my own, but I guess it makes sense in hindsight. Thanks for replying, everyone, I really appreciate it.

Well, that was that, she supposed, changing the thread status to ‘Closed by OP’. She wasn’t surprised, really, by what she had been told. Talents alone were rare enough as it was, as were Second Awakenings, so the idea that Talents changing was even rarer didn’t surprise her very much. Though the lack of surprise didn’t equate with a lack of disappointment, and she was frowning when she opened the final thread. What she read there didn’t improve her mood. Her poking around for information on acquiring an alias and Hunting without parental permission had last barely a half-dozen pages before it had been shut down by the Moderators, who’d made it clear that -while she was legally allowed to Hunt so long as her parents didn’t petition to have her license pulled- they wouldn’t allow discussions on how to get around safeguards or avoid parental involvement in underage Hunting. Especially not where even younger children could see it and use the information there to get themselves into trouble that they, unlike she, were far to young to handle.
Which was, she had to grudgingly admit, a very fair point. She didn't like it, but it was fair. The last thing she wanted was for some twelve-year-old to use advice meant for her to sneak into a C-rank dungeon and get themselves splattered across a cave wall.
Didn't make it any less frustrating, though, and it didn’t solve her problem in the least.
She leaned back in her chair, the soft pseudo-leather creaking under her in a way that it hadn't before the System had packed muscle and height onto her frame, and stared at the ceiling of her bedroom as she considered her options.
Option One: try to convince her parents to lift the firm, even ironclad, kibosh that they’d put on Hunting. While that was by any measure the most preferable option at first glance, it was also the least likely, and she frankly wasn’t sure how she’d manage to keep the change to her Talent or the presence of the System from being discovered. Thanks to the various less-than-complimentary MHO threads about her, a good portion of the world-wide Hunter community was well acquainted with her abilities, and just how weak she had once been. Her fellow Brocktonites were only more so, since most of them had intimate experience and first hand knowledge.
Option Two: Don’t try to convince her parents, start going into dungeons as herself, and see if they were actually willing to have her license pulled when they inevitably found out, demanded that she stop, and were refused. Which would not only have all the same problems as the first option, but cause some pretty serious damage to her familial relationships and hurt her parents deeply. She wasn’t particularly interested in any of that. She loved them too much to do it unless she had to, and she certainly loved them too much to let any argument about it spiral out of control. Which it would, inevitably, do.
And Option Three was…what? Start Hunting with an Alias? If it wasn’t for the Double Dungeon being so well-known, that would probably work, but she’d never be able to do it locally. The Protectorate members that were friends and former compatriots with her parents from their raiding days would spill the secret immediately, if they didn’t just sit on her and call her parents in to confront her directly!
So where did that leave her?
Not anywhere good, really. Hoping for another key to an Instanced Dungeon didn’t seem like the best way to do things, she still hadn’t received another no matter what dailies she’d completed, mostly getting trash items, and she still didn’t come close to being able to afford one on the System Store.
Though she had gotten some very nice rewards from dealing with that Dungeon Break, she hadn’t gotten one from that either. Which left her between a rock and several hard places, and that was only pissing her off more…
A soft ping drew her attention back to her computer, and her brow furrowed. She’d just received a private message from an ‘AllSeeingEye’, inviting her to a Jangle server dedicated to making sure that Underage Hunters could ‘get what they wanted out of life’.
Her eyes narrowed and her teeth ached.
She didn’t doubt that there was a server dedicated to helping people do exactly what AllSeeingEye claimed. Teens would be teens, Hunters would be Hunters, and anything that was against the rules would immediately have communities popping up to participate in it. Hell, she was more than aware of the fact that there were ‘dark guilds’ that went around locating and clearing gates before the Protectorate could respond, just like she was more than aware of the fact that there were some other darker aspects of Independent Hunting that no one ever talked about.
If it wasn’t for the System, she wouldn’t imagine involving herself in something as sketchy as all of this no doubt promised to be. But she did have the System, and the System gave her supernatural abilities -beyond those she already possessed as a Hunter of course-, abilities that would help her get extra insight into any situation she found herself in. She’d know if she was being lied to, she’s know if someone was up to something, and she’d definitely have the ability to get out of a bad situation if she found herself in one.
So she did the only thing that she really could under her current circumstances.
She made a new Jangle account, clicked on the link at the bottom of the message, held her breath, and hoped for the best as the new server icon popped up on her sidebar.
