THE STATIC ROAD - Chapter 3
DESCRIPTION

“Safe Zone”

The darkness moved like liquid.

Not fast.

Not slow.

Certain.

It poured through the hospital corridor without touching the walls, swallowing the red emergency lights as it advanced.

Elias dragged Maya behind him.

“Storage room,” he said quickly.

“What?!”

“There!”

A small supply room sat halfway down the ambulance bay hall.

Elias shoved the door open.

Shelves packed with medical supplies lined the walls.

Maya stumbled inside first.

Elias slammed the door shut behind them and locked it.

Immediately—

silence.

No screams.

No footsteps.

Nothing.

Maya pressed both hands against her mouth, breathing hard.

Elias leaned against the door, flashlight trembling slightly in his grip.

“What the fuck is happening?” Maya whispered.

“I don’t know.”

“That thing outside—”

“I know.”

“No, Elias, you don’t understand.” Her voice cracked. “I saw faces inside it.”

Elias didn’t answer.

Because he’d seen them too.

The countdown on the GPS screen burned into his mind.

00:07:42

Whatever was happening—

it was spreading.

Maya suddenly grabbed him.

“You said your brother called you.”

Elias looked at her carefully.

“You believe me now?”

“I believe something is happening.”

Not the same thing.

But close enough.

The room lights flickered weakly overhead.

Then—

the radio on Elias’s belt crackled softly.

Both of them froze.

Daniel’s voice whispered through static.

“Don’t stay still too long.”

Elias grabbed the radio instantly.

“Daniel, where are you?!”

No response at first.

Only breathing.

Then:

“Some roads hear silence.”

Maya frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel ignored her.

“You need to reach Sublevel Two.”

Elias stared.

“Hospital basement?”

“Yes.”

“What’s down there?”

A long pause followed.

Then:

“A sealed route.”

The signal distorted violently.

“Before they—”

Static exploded.

The radio died again.

Maya folded her arms tightly.

“Okay, I officially hate your dead brother.”

“He’s not dead.”

“You heard yourself say that, right?”

Elias opened his mouth—

and stopped.

Because he wasn’t sure anymore.

The thing in the wreck had Daniel’s face.

The voice on the radio sounded like him.

But something felt wrong.

Like hearing a familiar song played backwards.

The storage room suddenly creaked.

Both of them went silent instantly.

A soft scratching sound dragged slowly across the door outside.

Maya’s face paled.

The scratching continued.

Tap.

Scratch.

Tap.

Like fingernails searching for cracks.

Elias slowly killed the flashlight.

Darkness swallowed the room.

The scratching stopped immediately.

Several seconds passed.

Then a voice whispered from outside the door.

“Elias.”

Not Daniel.

His mother.

Elias felt his chest tighten instantly.

No.

No, no, no.

His mother had died when he was seventeen.

The voice came again.

Softer this time.

“Sweetheart… open the door.”

Maya stared at him in horror.

“You hear that too?”

Elias nodded slowly.

The voice trembled weakly.

“I’m cold…”

Something wet slid slowly beneath the crack under the door.

Dark liquid.

Like rainwater mixed with blood.

Maya backed into the shelves.

“Oh God…”

The voice changed abruptly.

Its tone deepened unnaturally.

“LET ME IN.”

The entire door shook violently.

Shelves rattled.

Boxes crashed to the floor.

Another slam hit harder.

Then another.

The lock bent inward slightly.

Maya panicked.

“It’s going to break through!”

Elias looked around quickly.

No windows.

No exits.

Only shelves and supplies.

Then he noticed something strange.

One corner of the room remained completely dark.

Not shadowed.

Dark.

The same unnatural darkness from the hallway.

Except smaller.

Contained.

Like a hole in reality itself.

Maya saw it too.

“What is that?”

Elias slowly approached it.

The air around it felt cold enough to hurt.

Inside the darkness—

he could see faint movement.

Road lines.

Headlights.

An empty highway stretching endlessly forward.

A road.

Inside the wall.

The radio suddenly crackled loudly.

Daniel shouted this time.

“THROUGH THE VEIL!”

The door exploded inward.

Maya screamed.

A figure lunged through the broken doorway.

Tall.

Faceless.

Its skin stretched tightly over a smooth skull.

Its arms bent wrong.

Too many joints.

Elias didn’t think.

He grabbed Maya’s wrist and jumped into the darkness.

The world inverted instantly.

Sound vanished.

Gravity disappeared.

For one horrifying second—

Elias saw roads.

Thousands of them.

Crossing endlessly through black space.

Some wrapped around buildings.

Some floated vertically through the sky.

Some moved.

Like living things.

Then—

impact.

Elias slammed hard onto concrete.

Maya crashed beside him.

The air smelled old.

Wet.

Industrial.

Elias groaned and pushed himself upright slowly.

Darkness surrounded them.

But normal darkness this time.

Maya sat up beside him shakily.

“…Where are we?”

Elias swept the flashlight around.

Concrete walls.

Rust pipes.

Flooded floor.

Hospital basement.

Sublevel Two.

A sign hung crookedly nearby.

AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY

ROUTE MAINTENANCE DIVISION

Maya stared.

“…Route maintenance?”

Footsteps echoed somewhere deeper underground.

Not the creatures this time.

Human footsteps.

Elias aimed the flashlight toward the sound.

A silhouette emerged slowly from the darkness.

A woman.

Mid-forties.

Gray coat.

Short silver hair.

Holding a revolver directly at them.

“Don’t move.”

Her voice was calm.

Professional.

Exhausted.

Maya immediately raised her hands.

Elias didn’t.

The woman noticed.

“You’ve crossed before.”

Not a question.

Elias swallowed.

“…What is this place?”

The woman studied him silently.

Then her eyes shifted to the radio on his belt.

The expression on her face changed instantly.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Where did you get that frequency?”

Elias frowned.

“What?”

“The voice talking to you.”

The woman stepped closer slowly.

“Who have you been communicating with?”

“Daniel Ward.”

The woman froze completely.

For the first time since meeting her—

she looked genuinely shaken.

“That’s impossible.”

“Why does everyone keep saying that?”

Because she looked directly into his eyes and whispered:

“Daniel Ward opened Route Zero.”

Silence hit like a gunshot.

Elias felt the ground disappear beneath him.

“…What?”

The woman lowered the revolver slowly.

“He was the first person to come back alive.”

Maya looked between them nervously.

“Somebody wanna explain literally anything?”

The woman ignored her.

Instead, she stared at Elias with growing disbelief.

“You really don’t know, do you?”

Elias stepped forward.

“Know what?”

The woman hesitated.

Then:

“Your brother disappeared three years ago.”

Elias nodded sharply.

“I know that.”

“No.”

Her voice became quieter.

“He disappeared from this hospital.”

Elias’s heart stopped.

“That’s impossible.”

“It happened in Sublevel Two.”

The flashlight beam shook in Elias’s hand.

The woman pointed deeper into the flooded basement corridor.

“There’s a road beneath Saint Mercy.”

A distant metallic scream echoed somewhere underground.

The woman immediately turned serious again.

“No time.”

She motioned for them to follow.

“If the Route fully anchors, this entire town dies by morning.”

Maya blinked.

“…Excuse me?”

The woman finally introduced herself while reloading the revolver.

“Agent Evelyn Cross.”

The last name hit Elias instantly.

Cross.

Like the dead patient upstairs.

Evelyn noticed his reaction.

“Yes.”

Her expression darkened.

“Harlan Cross was my father.”

The lights overhead flickered weakly.

Then every bulb turned black simultaneously.

Far below them—

something enormous moved in the darkness.

And for the first time—

Elias heard the sound of a road breathing.
