Hey, everyone!
Not a whole lot to unpack in this one, just checking in before things get hectic again.
The last fifteen days were hectic. Writing moved faster than usual. Almost too fast, honestly, and that started to freak me out a little. So I pumped the brakes, shifted gears into rendering, and I'll probably be tackling the first 50% of the update from here. Expect the next post to be a preview drop, nothing too spoiler-heavy, but something to chew on. Fair warning, though: this update is a tough one to tease without giving the episode away.
On that note, this update goes heavy on story. Like, really heavy. Fifty percent in, and there are only two choices so far. I'm guessing the back half lands around the same, maybe even just one. And as far as routes go, it's Emma's relationship route carrying the load, plus a few harem-adjacent dialogue moments sprinkled in.
I know that's not what some of you were hoping to hear. Game complexity and structure are still things I'm actively chipping away at for future games, but here's the honest tradeoff: The more I tighten the mechanics, the more it pulls against the storytelling. More choices mean more branches, and more branches mean the story has to stretch thinner.
So I'll throw it back to you—do you want us pushing in that direction (no guarantees, but we'll try), or would you rather we stay in our lane and keep doing what we do best (focus on storytelling)?
Also, Nii? What in the world is this?Something to look forward to. Those are key visuals for future episodes, and they're also a good segue into something I've been meaning to address: the story's direction.
A handful of people raised this after Episode 1 hit public release, and it's a concern I take seriously, because the last thing I want is to pull a bait-and-switch and possibly leave everyone gutted without reason.
After Chapter 1, the tone shifted. The atmosphere got heavier. That was deliberate. If you've been paying attention, the signs were already there; something is coming for Kei, and the weight of past decisions is starting to catch up with more than just him.
Chapter 2 is about consequences. The choices the characters made aren't going to dissolve neatly. Not every arc wraps up with the lights on and the music swelling. I get why that's unsettling. The story isn't chasing pain for the sake of shock, but meaning. I want to be upfront about that.
This isn't the classic "suffer now, earn your peace later" setup. Chapter 2 doesn't deal in emotional payoff, but rather, in emotional aftermath.
And if Emma's solo ending didn't already make it obvious, I'm just not a happy endings kind of person.
That's all from me for now. Just wanted to set the story expectation moving forward.
I'll check back in with the numbers when there's something worth showing off.
In the meantime, take care of yourselves, and have a good one.
