Chumi, who drinks 1 liter of tea a week: Welcome to the Artist Commentary, fellow Homestuck: Beyond Canon enthusiasts! We’re back on Deltritus after Jadetok because we just can’t stay away for too long, now can we?

Haven, They tried to make me sleep but i refused: Aw, I missed this planet.

Underwater Monsters Concepts by Haven

Haven: We needed a monster and I drew up a bunch of alchemized concept beasts, invasive species, all of them.

Floral: When discussing what type of creature to have Ly’lac fighting I was originally considering something like the hagsnab which is more of a naturally occurring creature but I agreed with everyone that we needed more examples of the many failed experiments that were left to inhabit the planet. I love all these guys! I did do some revisions since we already did a snail like creature the smuppet/crabdad creature became an eel.

Background by Floral

Andi: When I was in a writers meeting listening in, they were going through the update with me and in this section they were like “We need just like a random satyr, a really pointless, meaningless satyr that has no significance whatsoever.” and I popped in like “What if it was Percy Psycholonials but as a satyr.” And I just remember them being like “YESSSS” Hahahaha. I hope you can glean my thought process there, how I got from point A to point B and ending that with suggesting this hapless human, simp from an entirely different story. I loved psycholonials btw. I was glad to be able to cameo a character from Andrew’s other projects.

Haven: This was making me laugh its so good.

Sketch by Floral

Floral: The original sketch…… The little things surrounds them were suppose to be cherubs peeing also but it was starting to become a lot. The three satyr types…living in harmony.

Concepts by Floral

Floral: I also designed the Academic Advisor! It started out as playing with different Satyr body types and then playing with the clothes which ranged between a 1800’s Oxford educators, to eventually the typical Greek toga fit.

Panel 1009 by Annie “Chumi” Lee

Chumi: Such a polite knock! What is Swiss so scared of? I thought it would be very fitting of Swiss to have a huge banner with his symbol on it as decoration, he can’t help but flex a little.

Panel 1014 by Haven

Haven: Floral taught me animate to make this in one night, I was just as stressed as swiss is here.

Floral: Haven and I went on an Animate journey together for this GIF.

Panel 1012 by Andi

Andi: Since I do a lot of the UI stuff for cha.OS, I got a chance to write some dialogue. It was pretty fun to imagine how Deltritans would act during the beginning stages of the apocalypse. I enjoyed exploring these random’s having unique and interesting cultural exchanges.

I even went and gave all their handles a name. Guess which ones are satyrs and which ones are nymphs.

Anyhow, poor truthSmith. Could he have at least some kind of FRATERNAL SUPPORT!!!?? Not even a pity read? He’s the only one taking anything seriously, sure, he’s a little cringe and overly conspiratorial but so what! TRUTHSMITHS RISE UP!!!!!!!

Bathroom Background by Floral

Floral: The Bathroom…..this was a visual gag I thought was super funny, the big cutaway to just hiding in the bathroom. Why are the curtains drawn Swiss? You think he’s gonna get in there? Just too funny. At first i considered something tiled since that felt very true to greek baths but we really wanted to get the big garish thinker in there. Miles also suggest the Sword of Damocles because the pony doesn’t have enough problems.

Genuinely surprised I saw no one talking about the fascinus hanging there but there is a lot to take in already.

Icon by Haven

Haven: Here’s the sketch of “Hermes” what an inconspicuous browser swiss uses.

Painting Edit by Andi

Andi: They needed an edit of this painting but as an alkyirin. I worked my photobashing and painting magic to get the legs right. Pretty kewl.

Chumi: Hmm.. Mysterious arm…

Swiss Grills Drawing by Miles

Panel 1016 by Annie “Chumi” Lee

Chumi: This was a panel I was kind of intimidated by based solely on the fact that I don’t think any Homestuck character has ever smiled like this. Though it really helped to remember that this panel is supposed to look gross and silly! The details of shading for the gums and highlights on the teeth / lines between the teeth make it look extra crazy.

Floral: I looooooooove how you did this panel, he looks like the scariest person alive.

Concepts by Floral

Floral: I also designed the drop off!!!! The kelp was honestly a bit of a challenge until I started integrating the swirls. It’s very easy with this stuff to get too detailed and make it look busy, so in the end I actually sized up the original drawing I had and then just kept copy pasting it.

Chumi: Floral has a knack for environments and this one… is no different!! The colors pop!

Panel 1018 Sketch by Haven

Panel 1018 by Annie “Chumi” Lee

Chumi: Thanks to Haven for the guidance on this panel, as well as the idea that the interior shadows should be blue! The result…  a beautiful Terezi shot where the red really sticks out!

Floral: The lighting looks soooo gooooood.

Haven: This is a shot I've been excited to have out for a while now, Chumi handled it perfectly.

Panel 1019 by Annie “Chumi” Lee

Chumi: I’m a fan of this Ly’lac.

Andi: Me too. Very much.

Andi: MY FIRST LYLAC PANEL EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’d been stuck in satyr city doing a lot of satyr panels. I really wanted to do a nymph for once, ya’ll were hogging up all the nymphs from me! But finally… finally I got to do a really cute lylac. I also had a lot of fun drawing this background? Something about these colors is so delicious. Floral did great doing the color framework for the environments here!

Chumi: I love the crunchy textures in this panel…

Panel 1021 by Annie “Chumi” Lee

Chumi: We’re getting little peaks of the Chaos UI! It is very much based on the Trollian timeline UI, with little tweaks because let’s not fix anything that ain’t broke. It would have been too busy to convey all of the kids’ timelines on screen, so there’s a little scroll bar instead. We didn’t forget about them!

Panel 1023 by Haven

Haven: I love animating Ly'lac. She is just so much fun. Also meemaw in the back there going crazy damn!

Andi: Her natural aegyo is enough to kill a sailor. When Haven dropped this I actually almost let out a sound. A squee if you will.

Chumi: Protecting Lyly!! She didn't even know she was about to be eaten!!

Panel 1024 by Haven

Panel 1024 sketches by Haven

Haven: This one took so long LOL This was my first time ever rotoscoping, I didn’t have to, Florals sketch just called for another little dance but I felt like I needed to do something big. Originally after “the park it like its hot” part she was gonna do like that one kevin gates gif but it was getting to be a bit too much. Maybe next time…

Chumi: We were all so damn impressed with all of Haven’s animations. Animation’s kinda scary… but Haven really nailed it! The Lylac celebration gifs are used very often in our work chat.

Panel 1025 by Haven

Background images by Haven

Haven: Drop off bg images I made based on Florals original design. I love those bright pink seaweed tendrils.

Haven: MEEMAW SLOW DOWN!!! ...Uh oh.

Chumi: Bye Lylac, bye Meemaw! Bye everyone!! See you guys in the next one!
