In Doctor Who Lore, every TARDIS is fitted with a Chameleon Circuit which allows the TARDIS to disguise itself as a background object that no one will notice. There is also the Chameleon Arch, which the Doctor has used to turn himself human. So, do to unforseen circumstances (artist and commissioner fiat) the Chameleon Circuit and arch have both malfunctioned, transforming Martha and Sarah Jane into a pair of inanimate objects (in this case an armchair and a grandfather clock). Wibbly Wobbly.
