The 32-Round Stocked Luger - WWI’s Most Over-Engineered Weapon?

In 1916, the stocked P08 Luger with a 32 round trommelmagazin "snail drum" was probably the most advanced personal small arm available. In spite of its alarming complexity, the same drum magazine was used again in the MP18 SMG. Stocked pistols really aren't a thing anymore in the modern era, and while that is often blamed on the NFA, I'm not so sure that's really the reason.
