Chapter 18: The Ero-Cook

Leaving behind a group of unconscious Marine soldiers on their ship after their idiot leader had immediately tried to sink our ship without hesitation, it didn’t take long before we were properly anchored the Going Merry at the Baratie.

“Are you sure that was a good idea, Luffy-aniki? Beating up the Marines like that? What if they cause trouble later once they wake up or worse, if they call for reinforcements?” The worried voice of Yosaku asked me as we disembarked, with Johnny and Usopp looking just as panicked.

“Shishishi, don’t worry about it. We’ve just arrived at a popular restaurant so let’s eat~” I said cheerfully waving his concerns away with my hand as I took the lead and led everyone inside the restaurant.

“Stop worrying you two, we’re official pirates now. We were bound to run into Marines sometime.” Zoro said with an uncaring look on his face as he looked around the restaurant with a curious look. “I hope they have good booze here.”

Nami also didn’t seem too concerned as she stood on my other side with a smile on her face. “This place is actually not bad. I hope the food is as good as the atmosphere.” She said as she inspected the surprisingly nice and slightly fancy restaurant.

Tiche and a nervous Usopp stayed silent with the former’s gaze only briefly looking over the place before returning to me and the latter muttering to himself nervously.

Just then a large, muscular man with oversized forearms, reminiscent of that old cartoon Popeye the Sailor, and a shaved head stepped up to us with a clearly fake smile as he rubbed his hands.

“Welcome you rotten crooks. Is this all your party?” the man asked with closed eyes getting raised eyebrows from Nami and Tiche at how he addressed us.

Knowing he meant no harm though, I nodded happily. “That’s right. We’re pretty hungry so I hope you guys have enough food.” I said feeling my mouth start to water at today being the day I finally got rid of that pesky curse that made food tasteless.

“I see. Just to make sure, you do have money to pay for your food right?” the man asked while taking a quick look at us and noticing our current attire in slight doubt we could pay.

“Of course we do, don’t worry about it.” I waved his concerns away with a smile. “Now would you mind showing us to our table, we’re pretty hungry.”

As soon as I said that we had money, his expression changed and his huge grin became more genuine. “Of course, of course. Follow me.”

As we followed behind him attracting more than a few stares in our direction, mostly directed at Tiche and Nami for their beauty, I blinked at the man leading us.

His name was Patty, if I remember correctly.’ I thought silently barely recalling the guy and that was only thanks to his forearms reminding me pretty heavily of Popeye.

As we sat down, with Nami and Tiche on my sides, we were given the menu as everyone started looking through it.

I however didn’t even glance at it as I looked up at Patty with a hungry grin. “I want everything on the menu.” I declared seriously taking him by surprise.

“E-Everything!? You do have money, right?” Patty asked once more and relaxed when I nodded.

“And bring us some good booze.” Zoro added in a relaxed tone.

As we stated our orders, Johnny and Yosaku’s faces became pale since they had promised to treat us and everyone started ordering expensive things.

I decided to not say anything to tease them a little as I almost laughed as when it was their turn, they only ordered some bread and water with pitiful expressions.

“Shishishi, it’s fine you two. I’ll be paying for my own meal so relax and order what you want.” I said taking pity on them before blinking as I felt a hand pinch my arm.

Turning to the culprit, I saw Nami giving me a small frustrated scowl. “You idiot, you should have just let them pay!” Nami whispered harshly to me.

Thankfully Yosaku and Johnny didn’t hear her as they relaxed and after thanking me actually ordered a proper meal.

“Relax Nami. We have plenty of money to splurge a little.” I whispered back getting a small huff from her still unconvinced.

Fortunately she dropped it as we relaxed as we were served complimentary bread and having gone without dinner last night to appreciate the food more, we all took a piece.

As we talked among ourselves, I let my gaze wander trying to find a certain curly eyed blond cyborg and it didn’t take me long to spot him since he stood out quite a bit with his fancy black suit.

‘There he is. Our future cook.’ I thought in triumph before blinking at what happened next.

Sanji, who had just finished serving another table, took a curious glance at the restaurant before his gaze unexpectedly locked onto our table or more specifically on the ladies beside me.

Already knowing what was coming next, the excitement all but disappeared as my least favorite personality trait of Sanji immediately became known to me.

First his expression changed from a bored look as he widened his visible eye to epic proportions. Then realizing that he was not hallucinating, a blush and stupid smile lit up his face as his legs almost blurred before he was standing before us and had grabbed Tiche’s hand with his head bowed.

“Two angels~ I’m actually seeing two angels right now!” Sanji exclaimed passionately as his gaze alternated between Tiche and Nami and I could almost swear a freaking heart appeared in his eye. “May I know your names, please? My name is Sanji, the Sous Chef here.”

Unfortunately for him his heavy flirting wasn’t received positively, especially from the literal assassin he was holding the hand of as her expression had gone completely blank as she all but yanked her hand away from his.

“Tiche. Now please don’t touch me ever again if you wish to keep that hand!” Tiche declared looking at Sanji as if he was a mere bug and looking ready to stab him.

Sanji was not easily deterred though as he didn’t back down at all and instead got even more emotional somehow. “Tiche! What a beautiful name for such a cool beauty!” he declared still flirting heavily not noticing or ignoring how Tiche’s expression became worse.

Sanji then turned to Nami and repeated the same process. “And you, mademoiselle?” Sanji asked with the same passion.

From my place beside her, I noticed Nami’s face get slightly uncomfortable for a second at how forward Sanji was being before a devious look entered her eyes as she slowly pulled her hand away.

“Nice to meet you, Sanji. I’m Nami.” Nami introduced herself with a smile as she blinked cutely at him causing Sanji to lose all pretense of a gentleman and a perverted smile to appear on his face.

“Oh, dear ocean! I thank you for today’s encounter! Oh, love, I can’t bear this hardship of choosing between two perfect angels.

Go ahead and laugh at me. I’m now prepared to be a lowly pirate or devil if I’m with either of you!” Sanji declared while on his knees with two roses in his hands as he looked between a disgusted Tiche and a devious Nami.

Hearing all that cringy bullshit made a nervous smile appear on my face and across from me I saw Zoro with the same expression, only he was all but scowling at Sanji and I heard him mutter “ero-cook.”

‘It seems Zoro and Sanji’s interactions won’t be changing at all.’ I thought silently letting out an exhausted sigh. ‘And would it kill you to pick a single girl already instead of flirting with both Tiche and Nami at the same time man?’

I chose to ignore how hypocritical my words sounded due to my own growing feelings for the girls in question and just gave Sanji a tired glare.

Seemingly not done though, Sanji continued with his heavy flirting.

“However, how tragic it is! There’s too great an obstacle between us!” Sanji dramatically said as he held his heart.

At that moment, our rescue from having to hear more of Sanji’s cringy pick up lines, came in the form of a man with a huge chef hat, huge twirly mustache and a pegleg.

“That obstacle is me, right, Sanji?” The man, who could be none other than Zeff, asked Sanji with crossed arms.

Immediately, a frown appeared on Sanji as he finally stopped his flirting as he stood up properly looking a bit awkward.

“Shitty geezer!” Sanji said in place of a greeting.

“This is a good opportunity. Why don’t you become a pirate with them?” Zeff suggested causing Sanji to freeze and turn to him with widened eyes as he continued.

“You’re no longer needed at this restaurant!” Zeff declared firmly with a scowl only making Sanji frown more.

Before he could respond more, I decided to interrupt as I spoke up loudly.

“You got yourself a deal old man!” I declared happily, especially at that whole Sanji episode being over, as the two chefs turned to me. “We came here to look for a seafaring cook and being the Sous Chef he’s obviously talented and I can also tell that he’s strong.”

My words caught my crew off guard along with Johnny and Yosaku with Zoro especially looking annoyed.

“Really Luffy? Him?” Zoro asked doubtfully as he tilted his head at Sanji who immediately scowled back.

“You got something to say, moss head!?” Sanji barked with gritted teeth.

Mirroring his expression, Zoro barked back. “Yeah, that we don’t need an ero-cook in our crew!”

“Shishishi, see? They’re already getting along.” I laughed happily causing the two to turn to me with angry faces and yell at me at the same time.

“Who’s getting along with who!?”

Their response only made me laugh harder causing them to frown and look at each other in anger for answering at the same time.

“See? They’re even in sync.” I laughed being joined by Usopp and Nami who giggled in amusement.

My words caused Zeff to grunt with a small smirk on his face in seemingly approval.

“By the way, old man. How did you know we were pirates?” I asked curiously with a tilted head as my laughter settled.

“I just happened to see you come in that’s all and saw your ship.” Zeff said with a small shrug calmly causing me to nod.

Done being ignored, Sanji took a draw of his cigarette and leveled a glare at Zeff.

“Hey, you shitty geezer! I’m the Sous Chef here. What do you mean you no longer need me?” Sanji exclaimed before blinking and turning to Tiche and Nami for a second as his expression did a 180.

“Not that I would regret traveling with you two angels of course~”

After that Zeff and Sanji went back and forth for a bit with Zeff insulting him and Sanji insulting him back declaring he would never leave. Their interaction eventually came to an end with Zeff kicking Sanji in the chin and sending him crashing against a table.

“Well, my mind is set. I want him on my crew.” I declared with a nod causing Zoro to silently groan, Tiche to close her eyes in acceptance while Nami and Usopp didn’t really have any objections.

“Hmph, then you’re free to take him brat if you manage to convince him.” Zeff said with a grunt before turning around and walking away.

“Now I’ll leave you be. A certain someone ordered everything on the menu on our busiest hour.” Zeff said offhandedly throwing a small jab my way.

“Will do, thanks~” I shouted back at him happily with no shame at all.

As we were left alone again, I saw Zoro and Usopp had some questions but before they could speak, we heard a commotion outside before a gunshot was heard causing the restaurant to quiet down as nervous muttering started.

Turning to the entrance, we watched as a brown skinned man with scruffy hair, dark eyes and wearing a grey outfit who looked in terrible shape walked in holding a gun before sitting down at a table.

“Anything’s fine. Bring me food.” The man stated calmly as he set his foot up on the table. “This is a restaurant, right?”

We watched silently as Patty came up to who was obviously Gin, the Combat Commander of the Krieg Pirates and asked if he had money.

When Gin answered if lead counted as he pointed his pistol at him, he was taken by surprise when Patty brought down his arms and slammed him through the table immediately taking him out due to his current condition.

The restaurant then cheered as Patty threw him out but my gaze was focused on Sanji who had silently gone to the kitchen.

‘Seems we will be clashing with the Krieg Pirates after all.’ I thought silently knowing that if we left before then, then the Baratie and the place Sanji called home would be destroyed along with everyone here killed when Gin returned with Krieg.

Knowing that, there was no way I could not intervene especially as Sanji saw Zeff as the father figure he never got as a child.

I was pulled from my thought by Zoro who let out a huge sigh.

“Are you sure you want that guy on our crew, Luffy?” Zoro asked with a bit of annoyance on his tone.

“He didn’t really seem like he wanted to leave despite what we heard.” Usopp said commenting next.

“If you had a decent grasp of your observation, you would see that he’s the strongest here with that old man being a close second.” I stated calmly getting blinks from everyone as I saw some of the reluctance from Zoro disappear.

“Tsk, he’s still annoying.” Zoro quietly muttered to my amusement.

‘Seems their rivalry has already started.’ I thought silently with a small grin.

“You can tell how strong someone is as well? I thought it was just a sensing technique.” Usopp asked in surprise only to get a chop to the head from Nami who was the closest to him.

“Idiot, Luffy has already explained several times! How has it not gotten through your thick skull?” Nami demanded with an annoyed look as Usopp grabbed his head in pain.

“Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I’m getting my head scrambled every day!” Usopp yelled back in response only to get another hit, a much harder one this time.

“Stop complaining, are you a man or not?” Nami exclaimed with a twitching eyebrow.

Shaking my head at their antics and at the fact that it was Nami who was scolding Usopp for complaining about training which I still found surprising at times, my attention was moved to Sanji again as I noticed him walk out of the restaurant with a plate of food on his hand.

“I’ll be back everyone. I’m going to work on trying to convince our future cook to join us.” I declared happily before standing up and walking after Sanji.

I came out to the scene of Gin eating with tears running down his eyes in happiness while Sanji sat near him with a content grin on his face.

“Shishishi, yep seems I made the right decision.” I declared loudly catching their attention as Sanji looked up with a raised eyebrow.

“It’s you again.” Sanji said calmly in recognition as Gin just watched curiously while still eating frantically.

“Name’s Monkey D. Luffy! And I’ve decided that I want you on my crew, Sanji!” I declared confidently while pointing at him with a laugh.

“Let’s explore the seas together!”
