Simple Counter Shader (VRChat OSC Ready) | Release
DESCRIPTION

Related to the VRChat's latest release, the Avatar OSC feature, that lets you show any external data on your avatar, I decided to make a Simple Counter Shader, that basically displays an Integer value using a single material.

This shader is free to use for everyone and easily editable with Amplify Shader Editor.

You can DOWNLOAD the asset file at the bottom of this page.

Main Asset Features

  • Sows up to 6 integer digits
  • Supports any font using your own sprite sheet
  • Uses Signed Distance Field (SDF) technology to draw symbols perfectly crisp in both VR and desktop
  • Aligning support
  • Custom font colors and even texture patterns
  • Configurable culling options

How to use?

Use the default Unity's Quad mesh to apply a Simple Counter material on it, or just drag and drop one of the example prefabs.

You can change the displayed digits controlling the "Value" property on the material.

Columns and rows values are for custom sprite sheets and should be set to the columns and rows amount your sprite sheet uses. (If you use a default sprite sheet I provided, leave the values as they are by default.)

Making custom sprite sheets

If you want to make your own sprite sheet, I also provided a PSD source file, where you can change fonts as you want. To convert it to SDF format (looks like symbols with gradients on sides), I recommend to use a free Unity plugin SDF Toolkit.

NOTE: Before converting your sprite sheet to SDF format using SDF Toolkit, be sure that the source sprite sheet's Non-Power of 2 parameter is set to "None". Otherwise, the converted texture will have some visual artifacts.

For the converted to SDF format, final sprite sheet texture, I recommend to use this texture configuration in Unity:

NOTE: Better only use Mip Maps for fonts with some colored texture patterns on it. In other cases it's better to turn it off to prevent visual artifacts.

Rights of usage

This asset is free to use for everyone. You can use it in VRChat, your own games or other projects.  You can edit the asset as you want. Simple Counter Shader is completely editable with Amplify Shader Editor.

You are free to credit me as author, or not - it's up to you.
