Hello - Producer Nicole here! Viewer Matthew Franklin sent in this interesting card combination in Magic the Gathering that takes us to the intriguing and mystical realm of "very large numbers that aren't infinite". None of us started with a ton of knowledge about Magic (except for Director Rhys who is the massive dork Matt calls out in the video), but we all learnt a lot about it, and I'm now convinced there are other ridiculous combinations yet to be discovered.
Some fun behind the scenes trivia below:
Yes, we are not really filming in the Studio at the beginning of the video - we had already moved out of the Studio by the time we filmed - the yellow tint to that shot is because we shot in a different office that had yellow walls. The idea for the "destroy all lands" gag came once we had seen the progress of the renovations of our regular Studio and all agreed it looked suitably armageddon.
While the early edit of the Armageddon joke had extra explosions and dust effects added, we asked Gus to take them all back out again so we didn't distract from the real practical effects - every member of the SUM team hiding out of frame and throwing beams/plaster/shelves at the right time. Here is a shot of us setting up - we all had to wear a ton of layers to stop us getting scraped by splinters so it kind of looks like I'm the worst burglar ever.
Purchasing the 3 Magic the Gathering cards needed for the combo came to about $70 total, but we always knew we wanted to make our own versions of the cards with SUM designs to simplify the language. We'll release a full interview and process photos from Tabitha who designed the cards in the coming days.
