I was tricking along a jagged summit, lungs burning in the high air, when the horizon split with three sudden flashes. I thought it lightning—but then came a fourth, a brilliance so fierce it blinded me.

When I opened my eyes, the impossible was unfolding. Beyond the mountain ranges across the valley, four women stirred from sunbathing, their lazy motions swelling into cataclysm. They grew as though the very sky could not contain them, limbs breaching the clouds, their feet shifting alone collapsing peaks that had once seemed eternal.
