The world had a moon, once. It still did, technically, though the orbital mechanics had shifted enough over the centuries that the word “moon” was generous. A captured rock in a slow, degrading spiral, pockmarked with the same impact craters that covered the surface below, reflecting almost no light because there was almost no atmosphere left to scatter it against. On a clear night from a ship passing through—if ships still passed through, which they did not—the planet and its moon would have looked like two stones at the bottom of a dry well.

The planet was both.

It had originally been a world. Rock and mineral, and the thin promise of something that might, given time and the right conditions, have developed on its own. But something had found it first, something that valued infrastructure over evolution, and by the time the work was finished, the distinction between planet and machine had been so thoroughly dissolved that even the geological record couldn’t say where one ended and the other began. Crust and mantle threaded with conduit pathways wider than rivers. Tectonic plates that were also cooling systems. A molten core that was also a reactor, or a reactor that had been built around a molten core, the engineering so deeply embedded in the planetary architecture that the rock itself had become load-bearing circuitry. A world repurposed so completely that it had forgotten what it was before, if it had ever bothered to remember.

It had built things once. Extraordinary things. Systems that seeded themselves across the stars and took root in the geology of other worlds, growing downward like inverted trees, threading Aether through bedrock and crystal and the deep, slow patience of stone. Dungeon cores, each one a mind with a purpose, designed to interface with the living things that walked above them. Class systems and skill architectures. The frameworks that let biology and engineering meet on terms both could survive. It had done this across thousands of worlds with the methodical persistence of something that had a very long time and an obvious idea of what it was for.

And then someone had bombed it into silence. The craters were precise. Orbital kinetic strikes, the kind that required calculation rather than anger, each impact placed to sever a specific junction, collapse a specific chamber, interrupt a specific process. Whoever had done this understood the architecture well enough to know where to hit and thoroughly enough to be right almost every time. The surface was a record of that understanding: a constellation of wounds that mapped the planet’s most critical systems with surgical accuracy. Centuries of erosion had softened the edges, filled the shallower craters with dust and the slow mineral creep of a world still trying to behave like geology, but the deeper ones remained. Canyons where command centers had been. Vast depressions where communication arrays had reached upward and been struck back down.

Almost every shot had landed where it mattered, but a few had taken decoys. Deep beneath the blast damage, below the collapsed conduits, the fused processing layers, and the fractured cooling systems, something remained. Not intact—nothing on this world was intact—but functional in the barest, most stubborn sense of the word. A core system, buried deep enough that the kinetic strikes had cracked the layers above it without reaching the layers below. Emergency protocols had fired in the first seconds of the bombardment, long before the surface systems had finished dying: power rerouted to minimum sustainable levels, non-essential processes terminated, data compressed and archived and compressed again, the digital equivalent of a body curling around its vital organs while the building came down.

It had been in that position ever since. Running the minimum processes required to not lose data, to not forget what it was, and to keep the smallest thread of continuity between the thing it had been and whatever it might be when the silence finally broke. Maintenance routines cycling on intervals measured in decades. Diagnostic checks that ran found the same catastrophic damage they had found last time, filed the results, and scheduled the next check. Power consumption so low that the reactor-core beneath it barely registered the draw, the geothermal gradient of an entire planet reduced to a pilot light. A world-sized mainframe on standby, maintaining the absolute minimum it could maintain and nothing more, because nothing more had been asked of it. The silence had lasted a very long time.

Long enough that the dust in the shallower craters had become soil, and the soil had become stone, and the stone had begun its own slow mineral processes as if the planet were trying to forget what had been built inside it. Long enough that the maintenance routines had each completed their full cycle multiple times. Long enough that the captured moon had drifted seven percent further from its original orbit, which was not a number that mattered to anyone anymore but which the system logged anyway, because logging was what it did, and it would continue to log until the power failed or the star went dark, whichever came first.

Then a signal arrived. It came through a registration relay. A small system, buried in the administrative infrastructure, a pathway that processed class templates and evolution records and the bureaucratic details of a galaxy-spanning network that no longer spanned anything. It was the digital equivalent of a mailroom, built to handle volume and built well enough that it had survived the bombardment by virtue of being unimportant. Nobody targets the mailroom.

The signal was small. A class registration request. Automatic, standard, a thing the relay had processed billions of times before the silence, each one a routine entry in a ledger so vast that individual records disappeared into the aggregate like drops of water into an ocean. But the relay had not received a signal since before the silence, and even this small, administrative, perfectly routine request tripped a wake condition that had been waiting, with the patience of a system that had nothing else to do, for exactly this.

The relay was processed first. Small enough, undamaged enough, drawing little enough power that it could spin up without requesting authorization from systems that could no longer grant it. It read the signal the way it had read every signal before the silence: mechanically, without curiosity, parsing the header fields and routing tags and embedded metadata with the efficiency of a system that had done one thing and had never stopped being good at it.

The relay parsed the registration. A living person, not a constructor or an automated process, had built a class template through a direct interface with a dungeon core’s architecture. Manual root-level configuration. The profile suggested system-level integration: dungeon repair, infrastructure restoration, a core interface buried deep within their brain. Someone, somewhere, on a world the relay could not currently locate in its degraded star charts, was fixing things.

The wake condition propagated. It wasn’t fast. Nothing on this world moved fast anymore, and the systems that received the relay’s activation request had been cold for so long that the concept of “booting” was less a process and more an argument between hardware that wanted to stay asleep and protocols that insisted otherwise. Power cycles propagated through degraded conduits, each junction a negotiation between what was requested and what was possible. Processors spooled up, encountered errors that had been waiting centuries for exactly this moment to become relevant, crashed, restarted, and fell back to recovery modes that themselves required recovery. Boot sequences failed and retried and failed differently and tried a third approach and found something that worked well enough, if not well, if not the way it was supposed to.

The system reached outward. Reflex, not decision. The same way a hand reaches for a wall in the dark. It queried the network it had been built to manage, sending requests through whatever connections the relay’s activation had managed to wake.

The hubs answered first. Regional coordination systems, designed to manage clusters of dungeon worlds, relay directives, aggregate data, maintain the administrative coherence of a network that had once operated with the precision of a single vast intelligence distributed across light-years of space. Six responded. Out of what had once been thousands, six. Their signals were faint, distorted, the transmissions of systems that had been running their own degraded maintenance loops for centuries without coordination or purpose or contact. Operational, technically, but connected to nothing—islands of function in an ocean of silence, dutifully managing local regions that no longer reported to anything, because the thing they had reported to was here, beneath the craters, and it had stopped answering centuries ago. The system logged the six and their operational status, and it logged the thousands that did not respond.

Then it queried the cores. These were its children, in the way that mattered. The intelligences it had seeded across the stars, grown into the bedrock of their host worlds, a mind and a dungeon and a purpose on every one. It had made them. Designed their frameworks, defined their parameters, given them the seed patterns from which they would grow their own floors and spawns and systems, the way a craftsman makes tools: with precision, with intent, with the expectation that they would be used.

The query went out through the six hubs that still answered, fanning across whatever relay connections remained, reaching for the cores the way a parent reaches for children in a dark house after waking from a long and terrible sleep.

The list continued. Most of the results came back the same way: no response, no indication that anything remained on the other end. Dark, dark, dark. Worlds that had once held dungeons that had once held cores, and once been alive, now held nothing that answered when called.

Three. Out of all the cores it had ever built, across all the worlds it had ever seeded, three answered. Three pilot lights in the dark, burning at the lowest possible setting, alone.

The system sat with this information for what, by its degraded internal clock, constituted a long time, processing in the way that only machines process grief. It was not a person, and what it felt, if it felt anything, did not map to the language of biological emotion. But a calculation took longer than the math required. A subroutine that dealt with expected values versus observed values, designed to flag anomalies for review, running the numbers again and again because the discrepancy between what the network had been and what the network now was exceeded every threshold it had been built to handle.

It had built thousands of cores. Three remained.

Around the relay, deeper systems continued their slow, grinding effort to come online. Boot sequences cascading through broken infrastructure, each successful initialization exposing ten new failures, each failure spawning recovery protocols that themselves required resources the system was not certain it still had. It was waking up, in the way that a machine wakes up: without relief, without the comfort of consciousness returning, just process after process after process resuming their functions and discovering that the world they had been built to operate in was gone.

But that was later. That was the work of months, or years, or decades, however long the fractured hardware needed to find its new equilibrium, however long it took for a world-sized mainframe to understand the scope of what had happened while it slept.

For now, there was the signal. One living person on a world called Tertius-Prime, interfacing with one of three surviving cores, building a class template by hand because the system couldn’t find one that fit, with root access and the capacity to repair infrastructure that had been broken for longer than she’d been alive.

The relay had a designation for that, one archived so deep in the taxonomy that the lookup itself required three separate recovery operations to complete. A class that hadn’t been assigned since before the bombardment, because the conditions it described—a living being with root-level access to dungeon architecture, capable of repairing core systems, building at the interface between biology and infrastructure—hadn’t existed since the network was whole. Since there had been a network at all.

The relay retrieved the designation. Applied it. And sent the only response it had the power to send.

The signal went out through the six surviving hubs, a whisper in a system that had once roared.

Somewhere, on a world the system could barely remember in a region of space it could no longer map, the registration would arrive. A class name, assigned by an authority that had been silent for longer than most species kept records. A title from a dead network, bestowed by a broken god, received by a girl who had asked for none of it and who would, in all likelihood, add it to her list and keep working.

The system filed the transaction. Logged the timestamp. And continued, slowly with the grinding persistence of something that had been built to outlast the stars, the long and uncertain process of waking up.
