Dear Shrine Parishioners, thank you as always for your kind support! This is Rebis. Today, I’m sharing a new entry in the Youkai Pinup Encyclopedia. This one is inspired by a modern-day true ghost story and features the “Puff-puff Gyaru of the Sanzu River”! ---The "Puff-puff Gyaru of the Sanzu River" is a mysterious, youkai-like being (?) who appears in the story “ぱふぱふとDカップ” (“Puff-puff and D-cup”) from the book 『「超」怖い話 巳』 (“Super Scary Stories: Snake”). According to the tale, a man was undergoing a near-death experience and about to cross the **Sanzu River**, the mythical boundary between life and death in Japanese folklore. He could see his ancestors dressed in white kimono on the far shore. But as he tried to cross the river, someone grabbed his arm. Turning around, he saw—a bikini-clad gyaru pressing her chest against him! She said, “Don’t go over there—let’s do puff-puff instead!” and started walking while holding his hand. Motivated by the idea of puff-puff, the man shouted “I’m gonna do puff-puff!” and followed her… and then—he came back to life. You could dismiss this as just someone’s personal near-death experience… But honestly, I couldn’t help thinking—if that gyaru was some kind of youkai, that would be amazing. So I drew an illustration of her, partly as a record, partly for fun.If I ever have a near-death experience, I hope this gyaru comes to get me…!
Is she perhaps a counterpart or associate of Datsueba, the robe-snatching crone of the underworld? Or could she be an oni (demon) gyaru working as a hellish attendant on the banks of the Sanzu River? 本日お届けしますのは、新たな妖怪グラビア図鑑。現代実話怪談系の本より、「三途の川のぱふぱふギャル」です！
「三途の川のぱふぱふギャル」は、『「超」怖い話 巳』のエピソード「ぱふぱふとＤカップ」に登場する妖怪的存在(?)です。
ある人が、臨死体験で三途の川を渡ろうとしていました。向こう岸には白帷子の先祖が見えています。
ところが、彼が川を渡ろうとすると、その腕を取る者がいました。振り返ると、そこにいるのは胸を押し付けてくる水着ギャル！
彼女は「そんなところ行かないで、ぱふぱふしましょうよ」と彼の手をとって歩き始めます。「ワシはぱふぱふするんじゃ！」と奮起して彼女に付いていくと、彼は蘇生した――というお話。
個人の臨死体験と言ってしまえばそれまでなのですが……
いやでも、このギャルが妖怪的存在だったら面白いよなあ～と思い、記録と紹介も兼ねてイラストにしてみました。僕も臨死体験をしてしまった際には、このギャルに来てもらおうと思います…！
奪衣婆と対になるような存在だったり、関係者だったりするのだろうか…？それとも賽の河原あたりにいる鬼（獄卒）ギャルだろうか…？なんて想像を膨らませて、着物を羽織っているバージョンや鬼ギャルバージョンも描いてみました。
