Hey team, thanks for being here! One month in and the Patreon gang already feels huge<3 I recently received some questions about my musical journey and I thought this could be a good opportunity to properly introduce myself.
First here is a bit of context : I’m 27 years old and I’m french. I started playing guitar when I was 13. I never really learned theory and the proper techniques, a friend just showed me some chords and I started to learn songs. At the time I was mostly listening to 90’s and 00’s punk/rock stuff like Blink 182, Billy Talent and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Their guitarist John Frusciante had a huge influence on my guitar playing. When I was 16 I started a rock band with some friends, I was singing (badly) and playing guitar (badly too). It went on for many years and was my main musical project until 3 years ago. We did dozens of gigs and recorded two EPs. I will probably share that music with you some day!
As I grew up I got more into hip-hop, experimental stuff, jazz and pretty much everything else. So on the side I bought my first sampler, the MPC 2000XL. I started to make some tracks but yo the 2000XL is old as heck and it was harddd. I really loved it but I felt a bit frustrated and didn’t use it that much in the end.
Three years ago, I moved away from the city and my friends so the band thing stopped. That’s when I started thinking about live-looping! I think I was first exposed to this kind of jam with this video from You Suck At Producing. It just looked so cool<3 I knew I wanted to get away from computers so I went down the synth road and bought a Volca FM. Computers are awesome and I love mixing and editing music with it but they never inspire me. I really need to play the music, either on the guitar, a keyboard or with some knobs. Anyway that’s why I sold the MPC 2000XL to fund a Digitakt, which has now become the center piece of my music. As I wanted to include guitar in all that, I bought a looper pedal (the Ditto X4).
And here we are! Today I’m trying to go a bit deeper into music theory. I’ve started to learn some basic stuff in the past couple years and it’s really helping. I’m also still learning my way around sequencers and all that stuff. It’s probably worth mentioning that I studied audio techniques in school and worked as a sound technician for television for 5 years. It’s all over now and was never about music, but it definitely helped me get comfortable with complex patches and setups.
