“What the dragon doesn’t know can and will hurt us. We must send someone to petition the lord of the mountain. I’d much rather his snow bury our enemies than our corpses.”
— Councilman Hushan of the Foothills
Impressing a yín dragon is no minor feat. Nestling themselves in the most distant and dangerous areas of their domains, they rule their kingdoms from afar, only interacting directly with those who prove themselves worthy. Though difficult to obtain, there are few boons greater than the aid and wisdom of a noble yín dragon.
Regal Watch. In the first moments after Yu Ling finished her song, there was chaos: hooves, wings, teeth, and tails all tumbled over each other in a rising mob. The madness endured for only the first moments, however, as the tiger emerged as a fearless ruler among the gathered beasts, its quiet, rumbling growl quelling the storm of emotions. With order restored, creatures began to depart in groups under the watchful eye of the tiger, who followed close behind, stopping at each glade and watering hole to ensure no traveller was trampled in the commotion of the journey.
Third to Cross. Maintaining order among its subjects was a sacrifice, and the tiger was one of the last to depart for the Gate. Knowing that time was short and the easy way was sure to fail, its eyes turned upward towards a path that no other had dared to take. Standing between its kingdom and the edge of the world was a range of towering, snow-capped peaks. All creatures feared the howling winds and blinding snow that poured down from above. All, that is, but the tiger. Climbing across ice and stone, the tiger reached the very zenith of its domain and saw the Gate from the untouched land above the storm. Defiance of fear had opened the way, and the first yín dragon was third to cross the threshold.
Masters of Heart and Storm. Few have ever seen a yín dragon up close. On top of their reclusive natures, each yín dragon controls a powerful storm to guard its domain and the people living within it. Many invaders have been driven out of a yín dragon’s lands by the freezing winds and flurries of snow, leaving those under the dragon’s rule to a peaceful existence. Though powerful, these regal beings aren’t omniscient, and in times of great need, a village may deem it necessary to send a messenger to their benevolent protector. The emissary, traditionally a youth, must first reach the dragon, traversing the deliberately hazardous area of the creature’s lair as a trial of courage. Those who succeed are then judged on their bravery, honour, and perseverance. In addition to securing aid, the worthy few are treated as heroes when they return home, often on the back of a mighty yín dragon.
