Konomin

Konomin are a race of small kodama native to the dense, spiny forests that clothe the northern shores of the Yokai Realms, notable for their thick shells. An ancient and deeply solitary people, konomin are famously distrustful of outsiders and seek to avoid interaction with others where they can. In times of great upheaval, where communities are ravaged or displaced by famine, weather, and kaiju, konomin have been known to associate with others, lending aid only in the most desperate emergencies. Although such help is willingly offered to any in true need, the trust of a konomin is all but impossible for an outsider to obtain.

Heartseed Magic

All konomin are born with a heartseed—a fragile nut of magic which blossoms alongside its kodama companion. The health of a heartseed is tied to that of its konomin, as are its physical characteristics. Joyful, outgoing konomin may nurture a heartseed that blossoms into a vibrant, sprawling creeper, while severe or moody konomin may hold a heartseed that grows rigid, thorned, and perfectly straight. In all cases, the heartseed carries innate magic that konomin can wield, with the devotional ritual of pruning, watering, mulching, and decorating one’s plant serving as a conduit to a spring of spiritual energy.
