Paragons of respect and dedication, wèi dragons stand watch in quiet groves, looking for heroes and causes worthy of their devotion. While they welcome any good-willed visitors as friends, they are picky in who they call true allies. Only one mortal in a generation may gain the oath of a wèi dragon, but they will have a loyal companion for the rest of their life.

Eighth to Cross. The goat set out eager to help others along the path, but it hadn’t travelled far before needing help itself. While taking a shortcut through the undergrowth, it became hopelessly tangled in a mass of thorny brambles, with no way to break free. Bleating out in distress, it caught the attention of the monkey and the rooster, who soon arrived to cut it loose. Grateful for their rescue, the goat swore to aid its two saviours in their journey—a gesture considered a bit dramatic by the recipients, but nonetheless appreciated. The goat’s strength proved invaluable once the trio reached the river, as none could cross on their own. Under the monkey’s direction, the goat pulled logs and branches to the bank where the rooster and its flock assembled a sturdy raft. With a heave, the goat pushed their vessel into the water and leapt aboard, trusting their teamwork to get them to the other side. With its friends by its side, the goat joined the ranks of the zodiac as the first wèi dragon.

Faithful Devotion. Wèi dragons choose to see the best in everyone they meet. They are quick to offer friendship and trust until given reason to believe it misplaced, wary of allowing their good intentions to slip into naivete. When its faith in another is proven beyond doubt, usually through a great act of heroism, a wèi dragon may swear an oath to serve for a time. The object of such a promise may be another zodiac dragon, a kind-hearted adventurer, or even an entire settlement. No matter the oath, the wèi dragon will strive to prove itself, often to a fault. Despite their power, wèi dragons seek and value the approval of those they respect and are often willing to sacrifice their comfort, safety, and even lives in service to their cause.
