Stretching across every corner of the Material Plane, the hoofborne are an ancient, storied, and remarkably diverse people. Their distinctive appearances seem to suggest descent from supernatural equine creatures, such as unicorns or nightmares, but in truth arise from convergent evolution shaped by the influence of other planes of existence. Hoofborne are generally amiable towards other species and make for steadfast, cooperative allies, but they are also unapologetically proud and easily insulted—expressions such as “hold your horses” or “giddyup” are best avoided entirely in their presence.

Wanderlust. Wanderlust lies at the heart of hoofborne culture, born from both their deep love of travel and the tribulations of their past. Professions that keep them on the move, such as merchant, adventurer, or wandering priest, are especially prized, allowing hoofborne to earn a living while elevating their standing within the community—for the farther a hoofborne roams from home, the wiser and more respected they are considered. When nearing the end of their lives, many undertake what is known as ‘the last voyage’: a farewell journey through the places that shaped them the most, which lasts until the elder passes from the world on the road.
