“I was so preoccupied with whether I could slap antlers on an owlbear that I didn’t stop to think if I should have… But they’re not my problem anymore!”
—Dr. Francis Stein, Irresponsible Biomancer
Having heard of a growing demand for “owlbear handlers”, Dr. Francis N. Stein took upon himself to create the perfect specimen to solve everyone’s needs. In a catastrophic misunderstanding of the request at hand, however, the mad biomancer created an “owlbear with antlers”: a larger, more adaptable species that only exacerbated the need for proper owlbear population control. Left with no choice, the Borderless Union of Magizoological Sciences has categorised these ‘banbowlbears’ as a category V invasive species, and compensating adventurers that can lower their numbers to an acceptable degree.
Acclimated & Insulated. Despite what their appearance might suggest, banbowlbears are not exclusive to arctic environments, and often roam into warm regions when resources become scarce. Their white coats are composed of hollow fur and feathers, which insulate the banbowlbears by trapping air pockets that regulate their body heat according to their surroundings. Coats made from banbowlbear fur are highly sought for their thermal regulating properties, but remain relatively cheap thanks to the Beast’s status as an invasive species in every ecosystem it is found on.
Invasive Megafauna. Rivaling the size of an elephant, banbowlbears have no natural predators to keep their population in check. Their diets consist of roots and small invertebrates dug out of the ground using the banbowlbear’s massive, shovel-like antlers. Should they be left on their own, a handful of banbowlbears is capable of toppling an entire forest in a matter of weeks in search of food, permanently disrupting the local ecosystem.
