“Oh, Dr J, you’re awake…”
It was a girl’s voice, a young woman’s. Not Melissa.
I was awake but…but what’s happening? I was just, just..I can’t remember. I’d gone back in, to see that patient with Karen, the young girl from Minnesota, and now it’s all…blank. Had I passed out?
“W-where am I?” I’m on a couch. My couch? Yes, the walls are pink, the paint still smells fresh. I was laying on a lap, a soft lap. But it’s…it’s not Melissa it’s…looking up…oh my god it’s Lakshmi. Flashback: we were in Josie’s car, just like this, her hand was on me under the blanket and she made me-
“Don’t you remember? How we had to walk you up here?” Lakshmi said, her voice gentle, “You passed out in clinic, in the room with a patient. Oh you poor thing, we were so worried…”
“W-w-we?” I began, “Is M-M-Muh…”
“Melissa? No, I’m sorry. She left for the day,” Lakshmi explained, petting hair from my forehead. She had removed her scrub top, and from my angle on her lap her breasts looked enormous in a tight white tank. Her smile was white and bright, her skin dark and rich. “Josie was here for a while, but she left. Now it’s just me.” She smiled down at me, beatifically. “Just me and you. Just us…”
