This July, The Adventurer returns to the Late Roman world. We are heading back to that era where Rome is no longer just legions advancing in a textbook-perfect line, but a massive Empire, pressured on its borders, full of mobile armies, regional commands, and military solutions learned the hard way.
This time, the focus is on one of the most powerful images of the end of the ancient world: the cataphracts. Riders and horses covered in armor, long lances, closed helmets, and equipment designed as much to impose authority as to survive in a hostile environment.
For this release, we wanted to avoid the typical "single-material" armor that looks factory-made. The reality of the Late Empire was much more heterogeneous and pragmatic. The idea was for each rider to look rich in detail: different protection pieces, a mix of bronze scales, iron plates, hardened leather, cloth, and worked metal. We wanted to convey the real feeling of an imperial heavy cavalry that is expensive, complex, and very hard to maintain.
THIS MONTH'S REWARDS:
Magister Equitum
We open with the command. Historically, the Magister Equitum (Master of the Horse) wasn't just a field officer. In Roman tradition, since the Republic, he was the right hand of the Dictator, and in the Late Empire, he became one of the most prestigious positions, the supreme officer commanding the comitatenses (the mobile field army). He is not just a mounted hero. He represents the paradigm shift where power left the senatorial infantry tradition to rule from the saddle. His armor illustrates his status: rich and complex protection that doesn't seek the clean silhouette of past eras, but maximum functionality for a man who spends his life riding between border crises.
Cataphracts Command Group
Next come the unit's command characters. A heavy cavalry charge is not a wild, forward-thrown mob of armored horses. For such a force to work, it needs ironclad cohesion. The standard (the draco, whose cloth sleeve helped read the wind) and the officers set the pace and direction. They wear enriched armors and decorated Intercisa or Berkasovo helmets. They are the riders who not only fight but hold together a formation that, amidst the dust and noise, must act as a single block of iron.
Cataphracts Charging
Here is the brutal moment: the charging cataphracts. This cavalry was Rome's tactical response after centuries of facing Parthians and Sassanians. It is a troop designed for the pure physics of impact. The armors avoid repetition: combining lorica squamata (scale armor) on the body with heavy protection for the horse (cataphracta). They ride with the long lance, the contus, held with two hands, relying on their knees and momentum to break a tired enemy line or shatter a weak flank. They are not elegant medieval knights; they are the heavy answer of an ancient world that has grown ruthless.

The second unit shows another side of that same cavalry. Not everything is the frontal clash; a mobile army also patrols, escorts, and constantly moves across the territory. These miniatures reflect the operational life of the rider. Besides their weapons, they carry the campaign gear needed for deployment: bags, canteens, and spare harnesses. They capture that moment of transit, a column riding to reinforce a camp or take a position. They remain armored and lethal riders, but they show the agility that defined the Late Roman armies.
Late Roman Stable
And we close with the scenery: the Late Roman stable. This building is the third part of the Roman villa we have been working on. It is designed to assemble with the previous rewards and expand the set, closing the working area of the property, although it also works perfectly as a standalone building on any other table. July returns to Rome, but to a different Rome: later, heavier, more mobile, and much less peaceful.
