It’s another solid fig from MrJ, but it’s not without flaws…
From a design perspective, I think MrJ really missed the mark with their facial design. They tend to miss that mark a lot with their figs faces I’m noticing. But for the big man himself? A bit if a let down if you ask me...
I mean like, I get where they’re going with the blue eyes and all that, trying to evoke a feeling. But it’s a bit of a step too far from the current “Lego Look” for me that I’m not a fan of....
The alternate head though, that works for me, weirdly enough. Ya know because it’s powered up and a little over the top and that’s kinda neat! Like the design somehow lends itself more to the intentionality of the heat vision. The red (and the subtle change in eye shape) just makes sense!
The cape however was something that’s another aspect that let me down. It’s shaping is a bit too vanilla pillowcase-y for me. Not enough flow or dimension to it. It’s the same problem I had with MrJ’s last Superman fig… It may very well be the same 3D design entirely... it's a bit of a shame really.
The element is well printed though! In fact the brightest yellow on the entire fig is on the back of the cape, ironically. So mad respect for that aspect of the production.
But it does make ya notice how the yellows of the body are a little… orange.
It’s just a product of the design texture that MrJ went for I think. They could have certainly used a lighter shade, or even just a subtly darker yellow to reduce this brightness issue.
Weirdly though, the blue texturing works perfectly! So idk… again I don’t think it’s a huge drawback. But certainly noticeable compared to that cape.
The other noticeable thing is the lack of inner leg print. It’s not like it neeeeeeeded it… but it would have been nice to have at least a base layer of blue wrap around the whole fig! 🤷🏻♂️
The hair is also pretty okay. It’s well shaped and well produced. Not too over detailed. But idk... I’m just not loving the shape. I tried to poke around with some other parts combos and loosing the cape feels good, but the hair is still a little funky… especially when I swapped the head...
Again, very well made, very clean on the inside, but I think it’s just personal taste for me 🤷🏻♂️
For about $75, this is certainly a fine fig! Nothing amazing, but nothing poor either! Given the sheer amount of Superman figs that were released back in July, having this one up for presale as early as November 2024 was a great way for MrJ to get ahead of the curve!
And hey! If this was the only one you managed to score, it ain’t bad!
But I’ll hold more of my thoughts until Jaka’s fig arrives on my door… eventually!
