Sophie thundered into the room, setting down the malfunctioning device on her desk. Her own shift in scale just enough that her very familiar haunt that felt slightly 'off' to her. Regardless, that was far from her focus right now.
Her eyes traced from the desk where she had left the dwindled women in their makeshift bedroom, down to the floor where it now lay in a heap. "Urgh! Those little..." She left her insult unfinished. To Sophie, those had unwittingly proved her device's functionality, and were an outrageously enticing opportunity to gather data, but were now more trouble than they were worth. Still, she didn't regret her decision to whisk them away as she had - the scientist couldn't have just left them there.
"You know, you probably scared them when you came rushing in all giant sized like you did." Sophie said, accusing her shrunken colleague.
Nathalie rolled her eyes. "For someone so intelligent, you say some ridiculous things, Sophie. I'm sure it wasn't the woman zapping wildly with her shrink ray that might have spooked them. Besides, they can't have gotten far, right?" Nathalie winced at her state of undress - trying and failing to convince her outfit to agree to any sense of modesty.
Both women had lost sight of the shrunken pair in their chaotic conflict, but Nathalie was right - they weren't so small that they could be lost, nor so large that they could cover ground quickly.
However, they were unaware of just how small one of them had become. Jenna tried to reconcile the sheer scale of the women entering the room and the sheer enormity of that challenge quickly overwhelmed her. Their voices sounded strange to her; as though there was no directionality to the noise - it washed over her, and it made them harder to understand, especially given her panic. Jenna's own, much smaller ears, weren't used to interacting with voices at this scale.
There was no time for the science of it all, the tiny woman didn't know if Maisie was unconscious or hurt or even alive! Jenna's terror caused her to retreat back in fear, unsure what to do next. How could she get their attention even if she wanted to, yet that was the only recourse she had.
"Hey!" She screamed. "Down here!" Yet she had no idea how far her little voice could even travel.
Beneath the terrified squeals, Maisie was trying to recoup herself. Her vision finally coming into clarity, and her head's pounding slowly ceasing, only to be replaced by the sound of thudding footsteps. Maisie came to her knees, and turned in the direction of the cacophony, seeing enormous feet stride through the room. A sight not unlike seeing Jenna's own gigantic boots waltz past when Maisie was beneath the table yesterday. The tiny woman winced, envious of how tall she had been at the moment compared to now.
Maisie's focus wasn't yet returned, which made grasping the words of the towering pair difficult, her hearing wasn't as affected as her much smaller companion above, but her throbbing headache was her own obstacle.
Maisie squinted, the dress on the dark-haired girl - it hadn't been that long before, right? The tiny graduate felt her mind shocked into clarity: Jenna! She'd still be up on the chair!
High above, Sophie came to where she had left her captives, planting her hands on the desk. "I don't have time for this you two!" She called out, her voice coated in frustration.
"God, you sound like such a mum." Offered the dark-haired woman in critique.
Nathalie stopped by the chair, her own stature even smaller than Sophie's, and found herself quietly distracted by the sheer scale of the desk chair. Even on her tip toes, her head would barely be in line with it. "Maybe try sounding not so uh, scary?"
As she spoke, she dragged the desk chair, requiring more force than expected. Unbeknownst to her, Maisie was beneath it, and the tiny woman saw the monstrosity shift and then wheel towards her! It was a simple effort by Nathalie, but to Maisie it was like watching a train roar to life. For the third time this morning, her reflexes served her, and she dived towards the floor, skidding on the dusty wood, as her head whisked beneath the enormous metal legs that threatened the tiny graduate. The sound of the rolling wheels muting her panicked yelps.
High above, Sophie surveyed the area - she spied the boxes piled up beside her desk. "Almost a perfect staircase..." She said to herself, deciding she knew what path the tiny women had struck out on.
Yet the path that Jenna found herself on was determined entirely by the whims of Nathalie easing the chair away, sending the tiny woman into a spiral as she struggled to maintain her balance, her feet tumbling out from under her - the conversation above sounding more indecipherable than ever.
Engrossed by the 'out-of-scale' chair, she felt an innocent urge to further experience her own shift in stature, the size of the seat was enticing. Nathalie felt far less panicked about the shrunken pair now that she had come to an accord with Sophie, and felt confident the redhead could track them down in short order
Unaware of just how close they were...
