Just as Zach makes peace with his new life, he stumbles upon information hinting at a way to reverse the quantum reaction.
Kaya had long given up on returning to her own reality, but was grateful for Zach's company. Zach, in turn, found comfort in her presence and was beginning to accept the situation, at least until new information promised a way out.
Fun fact: In an early draft, there was a scene dedicated to Kaya learning how to make waffles, but since it veered so far from the overall plot, I cut it out.
