“…There is the heat of Love, the pulsing rush of Longing, the lover’s whisper, irresistible—magic to make the sanest man go mad.”

― Homer, The Iliad

Elena wiped down the same table for the third time, her cloth moving in mechanical circles across wood worn smooth by countless elbows and wine cups. The Aegean Olive had been in her family for six generations, each owner adding their own recipes to the leather-bound book that lay open beside the ancient cash register.

The lunch crowd had departed hours ago, leaving behind the familiar symphony of settling wood and distant traffic. But tonight felt different. Tonight, the shadows between the tables seemed to pulse with their own rhythm, and the painted murals of olive groves and azure seas appeared to shift when she wasn’t looking directly at them.

Marcus entered just as she was about to flip the sign to closed. A thin man with kind eyes and calloused hands, he’d been coming here every Tuesday for months, always ordering the same dish—lamb with herbs her grandmother had taught her to prepare. But tonight, when she brought his meal, he stared at the plate with confusion.

“This isn’t what I ordered,” he said softly, his voice carrying an odd echo in the empty dining room. Elena looked down at the plate she’d prepared—the same dish she’d made him dozens of times. But now the meat seemed to writhe slightly, and the herbs formed patterns that hurt to follow with her eyes.

She blinked hard, and the plate appeared normal again. Marcus smiled his usual gentle smile and began to eat, but Elena noticed he cast no reflection in the polished surface of his wine glass. Around them, the taverna’s walls seemed to breathe, expanding and contracting like the belly of some vast, sleeping creature.

As the night deepened, more regulars arrived despite the closed sign, each ordering meals from recipes Elena didn’t remember learning, speaking in voices that harmonized with sounds no human throat should make. And in the kitchen, the family recipe book wrote itself, invisible hands adding ingredients in languages that predated Greece itself.
