Hi all—good news!
I've successfully appealed YouTube's removal of the Gamergate Tangent, which was taken down for "harassment and bullying" after bad-faith flagging by, I can only assume, Gamergate supporters.
I have decided to age restrict the Tangent (like I did with the psychedelics one) to help prevent future flagging. So you'll have to log in to YouTube to watch it. I hope that's not too inconvenient.
If I were ever to refine this Tangent into a main channel video (which seems appealing at the moment), I would have to be much more cautious about showing examples of harassing messages, and generally with using non-euphemistic language. Because, as we've learned, Gamergate continues to be one of the most vindictive and pathetically online movements out there. They complain that feminist criticism is somehow "censoring" games at the same time they organize boycotting, flagging, and harassment campaigns to silence anyone who disagrees with them.
Unfortunately YouTube's flagging system has always been vulnerable to this type of abuse. An hour of video gets uploaded to YouTube every second, so you can imagine the moderators do not have a lot of time to spend reviewing the context for each flagged video. False positives happen. In 2016 I had a video called "Why White Nationalists Are Wrong" or something like that taken down. It was flagged and removed for violating YouTube's hate speech rules, presumably because it showed hate symbols onscreen or didn't censor the word "N*zi." Meanwhile, actually bigoted videos don't get taken down because the bigots know to use dogwhistles. And they're so gleeful about false-flagging anti-fascist videos—"I thought you wanted more censorship online! I guess karma's a bitch!" So I've been blurring swastikas and generally being very careful with de-contextualizable quotations ever since. I need to be more cautious with the Tangents too it seems.
