We are highlighting “Gujo Bushi,” featured in our lesson video!
“Gujo Bushi KawasakI” is one of the ten songs performed during “Gujo Odori,” a traditional Bon dance festival held in Gujo City, Gifu Prefecture, with a history of over 420 years.
Gujo Odori is known as one of Japan’s three major Bon Odori dances and attracts large crowds every year.
One of its most unique features is the “All-Night Dancing” period, held from August 13th to 16th. During these four nights, people dance from 8:00 PM until 5:00 AM, up to 9 hours straight!
Today, the tradition is preserved and promoted by the Gujo Odori Preservation Society, and its charm continues to spread across Japan and even overseas.Events are held throughout the year, not just during the Obon holiday—so if you ever come across one, we highly encourage you to join!
