Final Rewrites
Hey!! I should give you an update from the video mines so you know I'm alive! It's been too long without an update and I feel bad!!! wahh!!!
We're in the final stages where things get a little bit out of our hands. Because the video covers laws, legal cases, and directly addresses the actions of litigous corporations, Kat's sent most of the final script out to fact checkers and is showing the risky parts to a lawyer to make sure we have everything 100% correct. We have to wait on their responses before we post it publicly, but while we wait I'm still working on it, and when I'm finally happy with it all I'll post it here for your feedback while we wait for the checkers.
Once Kat's ankle was no longer destroyed, we spent a weekend back in Temecula getting some shots we had to miss the first time. The shots you see here are from that second shoot.
The only thing stopping me posting it sooner is that there's a couple of gaps throughout the video where some stuff I'm going to film all at once will go, and I've put those off until the end because they're a bit messy and I want to make sure I get everything planned all at once so I don't have to cover my garage in slop a second time.
If you look at the small yellow/red bar above the timeline, you can see there's gaps in it. Those are the places where I made some small changes and need to do some new visuals for them, or where one of those bits I just mentioned will go. It's not a lot of gaps, and I think it'll be about 2 weeks max.
A 10 minute tangent on a bad conservative book about the topic, and a 25 minute chapter about shareholders and private equity, was fully written + recorded and in the editing stage before being cut because I felt like they went too far off-topic. When this video is done, the first thing I'm gonna do is polish the book segment into a proper video and post it on here for you folks (and then maybe afterwards put it on the second channel? We'll figure it out). I figure if I find ways to USE all the stuff I made while working on this video it'll prove how much I was actually doing all this time. I wrote about 100,000 words over the course of making this video, and it'll be nice to get some material out of the stuff that didn't make it in!
The video is looking to be close to exactly 4:20:00 in length, I'm still doing some changes but hopefully it will land at exactly 4:20 because that would be funny.
This is the best, longest, and worst thing I will ever make. I'm proud of it, but it's forced me to reassess how I make videos and I have some ideas for how to go about this differently in future. I'm really excited to start making something new and generally doing more things. I've basically told all my friends 'I'll hang out with you as soon as I'm done with this video' for over a year and I'm pretty sure everyone just thinks I hate them now. And I do hate some of them, but that's just how it is.
It's also damaged me health-wise in ways I didn't expect. I've managed to give myself some kind of injury in my mouse-using wrist. Carpal tunnel? RSI? One of the first things I'm doing when this is done is talking to a doctor and figuring out why exactly it hurts to hold anything in my right hand now. I assumed these were problems I had just luckily avoided, and I'd just be fine forever, but no, once you hit your thirties you stop regenerating hit points and you start to just fall apart. I've said the phrase "I'll get a work life balance once this video is done" too many times but my body is telling me it's time to take it more seriously.
I can't tell you how thankful we are for your patience with us. Well, with me, mostly, it's my fault. It was hard to make this script accessible for a general audience, and it felt important to get right since it concerns consumer rights and the future of anti-trust, and the succession of corporate tech dynasties over the past couple of decades, and what we should be doing about it. Kat and I have had some productive discussions with consumer advocacy groups about how to put together a proper call to action instead of just complaining and then saying 'thanks for watching!' and I'm more of a 'just complain' guy, so this was a new skill I had to learn.
Talk to you again in 2 weeks with a big draft of the whole video, and failing that, a really good excuse and pictures of me in the hospital instead of Kat.
