Hey guys, we need to talk about Barely Working, adult game censorship and future game plans.
Barely Working
Barely Working will be releasing early access very soon (give me like 2 weeks and I'll have a better idea for a release date). Ideally, we release early access with 3 outfits for 5 levels, but if that doesn't work out then I would be okay releasing with less outfits created because I know the team is working hard and we'll have more outfits done very quickly after release.
Our goal has been 5 levels with 3 outfits, only recently have I changed the goal to 5 levels with 5 outfits because the team got bigger. I am committing to ending development after that. I know Barely Working is insanely popular, but I feel like we're really pushing the limits on the gameplay and there are only so many scenarios I can put Candace in that work with the freeuse element. Even with our limitations, our team has done a great job keeping Barely Working fresh and fun. The outfits are well made and the writing stays light-hearted.
Barely Working will be releasing early access on Steam, but... no longer on itch?
Adult Game Censorship
If you are unaware, adult games and adult content are being taken down due to payment processors and many other factors that we do not need to get into. The website, itch, has been forced to disable their paid adult games, as of today. They are looking for alternative solutions, but this has affected Queen's Brothel, which has had its viewership decline to nearly 0% on itch. Their current solution is that you can not buy adult games on itch, but you can play free ones. Technically, if I were to release Barely Working with this current solution in place, we would lose all incoming traffic to Barely Working and no one would be able to play it on itch. Itch is spectacular for getting new viewers, it's not something I would like to lose.
With that being said, Barely Working will be sold on itch as soon as they have a viable solution and I'm hoping that will be soon because we're gonna be releasing soon.
As for my thoughts on the whole situation, I don't like to jump to conclusions about what is going to happen, but I am prepared for multiple scenarios. If games become more censored, but we're able to continue developing on Steam and Patreon then I'll have to pivot accordingly. It has already happened once with incest games. If payment processors truly stop supporting adult content then the solution is cryptocurrency, but I really don't like that unless we have to.
Future Games
I'm going to guestimate that Barely Working 5 levels, 5 outfits will be finished by December. Before then, we would like to debut three games ideas. We are sticking to our roots of making unique adult games unlike anyone else.
A game where you have to have sneaky sex with the MILF next door
A story-rich dating sim with unique speed-dating gameplay
A freeuse-first visual novel style game with lots of choices that change outcomes
Each game may or may not resonate with our audience, so we are going to be releasing prototypes and seeing which games are fun or not and pivot accordingly.
Conclusion
After much thought, I have come to the conclusion that making games will always be too hard and the answer is to just think of something cool and try to make it. I'll talk to y'all very soon once we set the Barely Working release date. Cheers!
