We got our footage back!
It took longer than expected, because even though we have local processing now, they underestimated the demand for Super8mm and Double 8mm (and 16mm) film processing. Which is great for them, but not for us so much. And now things are going to be moving a little slowly for post, because we're in the thick of finishing the script for The Vessel. We'll have a BIG update for that project coming up in 7-10 days!
I (Alan) am currently editing, and things are coming together really well! There are a couple shots that just didn't work the way I'd hoped they would, but we shot in a very confined space, so I wasn't able to get the camera exactly where I wanted it. My house is surprisingly small.
We're still deciding if we want to build up a soundtrack (we didn't record sound on the day, because film doesn't record sound!) or just go with a score.
We're also excited to announce that the score for this short will be written by our very own David Sant! We shouldn't have any VFX work to do, and the "color grade" will just consist of balancing levels and contrast slightly between shots. We actually used a light meter on set (had to! No other way to get exposure set properly for our film stock,) and we shot in B&W, so there's not a ton to do there.
We are thinking about maybe some re-timing shenanigans to mess with the pace a bit? We shot at 24fps (normal for double 8mm is 16fps) but we may mess about with some shots to drag out tension or get some jumpiness. Still figuring that out.
We'll have an edit up with a temp score for Studio Execs to see by early next week. We'd love your feedback as we get this across the finish line.
Thanks for all your help with this so far! We'll have a decently long BTS video when we're done with everything. But that's probably a month or more away at this point. We had a ton of fun shooting this, and it's looking like it's going to be even more fun posting it!
