I think I hit gold with Xavier's expression in the second panel here, I also accidentally drew his cheek fluff forming a rounder shape while inking and ended up liking it enough that I went back to previous pages to make them more like this.
So as you guys can see the eye thing will make a little more sense as the comic goes on, it works as setup for a joke and a plot beat or two but as of the current situation it's an unavoidable source of awkwardness for Boomer and dread for Miles, he knows going into it that it's going to contribute to a poor first impression and there's nothing they can do about it. You could say it's a little awkward that it comes out of nowhere and isn't explained in any way, but in the long run it's only a couple pages between the eye being first shown and getting the explanation here, and it doesn't make a lot of sense for Boomer and Miles to discuss something they already know about, right? It would come off to expository and for the benefit of the audience only.
