The battle was lost.
Ghost dragged himself through the dense underbrush, every breath a struggle, every step heavier than the last. The forest was alive. It whispered, creaked, breathed… and took. The enemy’s weapons had done their part, but it was the forest that broke him.
His vision flickered. Shadows danced at the edge of his sight, but when he looked directly—nothing. Blood ran warm down his thigh, soaking through his broken armor.
He stumbled, caught himself and pressed a trembling hand against a tree trunk. It left a dark, wet smear.
A soft sound behind him—or was it only the wind?
Ghost cursed under his breath.
He wasn’t alone.
Not anymore.
