Had some stream issues again (I promise I am working on them!) but here is the VOD of last night's watchalong of the film Civil War. To be honest, I found myself more charitable to it on this rewatch, although my central criticisms remain!
I think it's a fascinating film to discuss, even as I don't have a particularly high opinion of it, because of the ways in which it fails. There are some arguments I'd be willing to listen to in terms of the meta of the movie and the way it engages in the same kind of media it critiques, but ultimately his desire to be "above politics" makes me think that those aspects of the film are more coincidental than intentional.
TLDW: Alex Garland's idea of "journalism" is realllllly outdated and shows his own bias. He should have read some Susan Sontag, like On Photography or Regarding the Pain of Others before firing off his mouth about how photojournalism is about objectivity.
