This time, I'd like to talk about color adjustment techniques for blending characters into backgrounds.
The Classic Multiply Layer
One of the most common approaches for blending characters into backgrounds is using a Multiply layer.
The idea is to overlay a color that matches the background using Multiply. It works really well for dark scenes. The downside, though, is that it tends to make everything darker overall.
For example, let's say you want to express a character being lit by blue light. You want that blue tint, but you also want to keep things bright. That's where Multiply alone starts to fall short.
Reducing the opacity of a Multiply layer just brings it back toward the original color. It can make things darker, but it can't make them brighter. So, we need to bring in another layer!
Combining with Overlay
Add an Overlay layer on top of the Multiply layer.
With an Overlay layer in the mix, you can apply color while also brightening the image at the same time.
The tricky part, though, is that when you reduce the opacity of the Multiply layer, the Overlay can cause the image to brighten more than expected. Balancing the two layers is surprisingly fiddly.
Having to tweak two layers at once gets a bit tedious. So I came up with a slightly more manageable approach.
A Simpler Way to Adjust
Fix the Overlay color to white, and use only the Multiply layer's color to do all the work.
Overlay has a useful property: it has no effect on mid-tones (gray). So by using mid-gray as your reference point for the Multiply color, you can control brightness like this:
Want it brighter→ Use a color lighter than mid-gray.
Want it darker→ Use a color darker than mid-gray.
Since you're only adjusting one layer, the Multiply layer, it becomes much easier to work with!
I think this method makes blending characters into backgrounds a lot more approachable, so feel free to give it a try!
