The Hastings-class frigate occupies a unique place in the history of the Systems Alliance Navy. Introduced in early 2110 and constructed by the renowned Manswell Shipyard in the Alpha Centauri system, the class represented one of humanity's first purpose-built deep-space warships designed around the realities of slipspace-era warfare. While later classes would eclipse it in size and firepower, the Hastings established many of the design principles that would define Alliance naval architecture for decades. 

The frigate emerged directly from lessons learned during the development of the exploratory vessel MCV Constantinople. Alliance planners recognized that expanding human territory required warships capable of operating independently across vast interstellar distances while possessing sufficient firepower to deter any potential threat. The result was a vessel that challenged conventional assumptions regarding frigate design. 

Design and Protection 

At the time of its commissioning, the Hastings was nearly twice the size of any previous Alliance frigate. Measuring approximately 570 meters in length and displacing nearly one million tons, the vessel blurred the line between traditional frigate and cruiser classifications. 

The increased size was not simply a matter of prestige. It allowed the incorporation of several revolutionary defensive technologies that would later become standard throughout the Alliance fleet. 

Most notable was the installation of a 60-centimeter layer of A3 Battleplate, the newly developed armor system created by Manswell Corporation. Combining reinforced titanium alloy, fluid ceramic shock-dispersal layers, and advanced thermal protection systems, the armor provided unprecedented survivability against both kinetic and energy-based attacks. 

Complementing the armor was the Multi-Frequency Mass Deflective Barrier (MFMDB), an advanced defensive field capable of dispersing incoming kinetic impacts across multiple frequencies. Together, these systems gave the Hastings an estimated survivability nearly ten times greater than contemporary Alliance frigates. 

Naval analysts at the time often described the vessel as "a cruiser wearing a frigate's designation." 

Armament 

The centerpiece of the Hastings-class was its massive 12L3R2 Mass Accelerator Cannon, a rapid-firing light coilgun that extended nearly 400 meters through the vessel's spine. 

The weapon fired a 300-kilogram ferric-tungsten depleted uranium projectile at approximately five percent of the speed of light. The resulting kinetic impact delivered energy equivalent to nearly eight megatons of TNT, making the Hastings capable of crippling or destroying virtually any known spacecraft with a direct hit. 

While less powerful than the heavy spinal MACs later mounted aboard Alliance cruisers, the 12L3R2 compensated through a higher firing rate and reduced recharge cycle, making it exceptionally effective during prolonged engagements. 

Supporting the primary gun was a sophisticated suite of secondary weapons. 

Four Hyperion Laser Cannons—two mounted dorsally and two ventrally—provided precision anti-ship and anti-fighter capabilities. These directed-energy weapons were among the earliest operational deployments of laser technology within the Alliance Navy. 

For point defense, the class initially carried numerous Vulcan rapid-fire cannons designed to intercept missiles and hostile strike craft. As technology advanced, these systems were gradually replaced by the more capable GUARDIAN Laser Point Defense System, significantly improving interception rates. 

Long-range strike capability was provided by twenty Hurricane missile pods and two Havok strategic missile silos. Together, these weapons gave the Hastings the ability to engage targets across multiple engagement envelopes simultaneously. 

Crew and Operational Role 

The original Hastings-class carried a complement of 200 naval personnel and 300 marines, reflecting its dual role as both a warship and a rapid-response deployment platform. 

The vessel's internal hangar facilities housed two Pegasus dropships along with a selection of armored vehicles and support equipment. This allowed the frigate to conduct independent planetary operations, colonial security missions, and limited amphibious assaults without requiring dedicated support vessels. 

Legacy 

Although later frigates and cruisers would surpass it technologically, the Hastings-class proved instrumental in shaping Alliance naval doctrine. It demonstrated the viability of combining heavy armor, advanced defensive fields, and overwhelming firepower within a relatively compact hull. 

Many technologies first deployed aboard the Hastings—including A3 Battleplate, Hyperion Laser Cannons, and integrated missile warfare systems—would later become standard features across the Alliance fleet. 

For naval historians, the Hastings remains more than merely a successful frigate. It was the first true Alliance warship of the slipspace age, a vessel that bridged the gap between humanity's early interplanetary fleets and the powerful interstellar navy that would eventually emerge. Its influence can still be seen in nearly every major Alliance combat vessel built thereafter.
