Division of a vibrating string into its upper harmonics:
A vibrating string is vibrating in all of these ways at the same time, but the harmonic vibrations above the fundamental (top illustration) are mostly moving too fast for the human eye to catch them as anything but blurs. The faster, narrower vibrations are happening "inside" the slower, broader ones – as a visual analogy, imagine a sine wave, perfectly smooth, up/down/up/down; then imagine the sine wave is made of triangles; then imagine each triangle is sprouting two smaller triangles; then imagine that there's either a tiny dip or a tiny upward bump between each big triangle, et al., et al. Many different waveforms, happening inside the fundamental (big one).
