DESCRIPTION

Coco became fond of going to St. Gabriel's Hospital after the death of her brother Gabe. It didn't comfort her, but it calmed her troubled mind that moved between the sadness of grief and the rage of a world that had fallen apart. There was nothing left of what they had built together. Not their hunting brotherhood, not their family, not the research they had been working on for years.

The smell of disinfectant and the blue lights seemed to embrace her, to tell her that she had come home. A sterile, impersonal house, but one that still brought back familiar memories. She could see her brother hooked up to an air respirator, trying to find a miracle cure that would bring him back.

She couldn't say why walking through those white corridors straight out of a backroom managed to clarify her memory, but it did, and, above all, the last thing she wanted to do was forget. Especially the quieter areas, where all the chronically ill people were. Others would have thought the place was depressing, but not for her.

At first she did not know how to justify her presence, but little by little the nurses and doctors stopped asking and got used to her. Sometimes she lied and when one of them became suspicious and began to ask maliciously about the symptoms of this or that patient, she always answered calmly. It would have cost her more but for the fact that she was also a doctor. Although a very different one from the ones in front of her. She didn't believe in saving people when they were already damaged, she thought something could be done earlier, much earlier. To empower humans with new abilities that would give them more strength, agility and endurance. With those improvements, a place like that would be much emptier.

She couldn't be sure when that idea took root in her brain, but one fine day she found herself on her notebook scheming in front of a patient's bed a plan that would end all plans. An obsession that ended her grief and would take her to the next stage. Maybe Gabe was a necessary evil, maybe there were others who did benefit from that tragedy. Maybe his death would not have been in vain...

She looked at the lovely girl with her blonde curls scattered across the pillow. She had long since become an unwitting muse. A young woman whom no one visited, who would spend the rest of her existence prostrate. A perfect patient. Crystallized in time waiting to be awakened with a kiss.

Coco stole her chart and studied it for days before determining that she could try something experimental, quite risky and full of ethical dilemmas, but radically better than the state she was in. Part of the problem with that unclaimed girl was that no one knew where she came from, or her name, just a badge and a cafeteria uniform. Something that could have helped clarify her origin but had resulted in a dead end. Although she had undergone all kinds of tests, much of her family and medical history was missing, and to that was added the fact that almost her entire body had been replaced with android parts. What was left of her was little more than a spirit encased in a head.

Which gave her an idea.

She had to be discreet and act quickly, and for that she lacked hands and brute strength. She remembered her old companions, two muscle-bound, brainless brutes that she quickly recruited as assistants. It didn't cost her too much, they were eager to do something productive with their pitiful lives. She rehabilitated one of the old abandoned F.E.T. bases and then, magic happened. Everything seemed to be aligned in her favor.

She managed to get the girl out by bypassing hospital security and several interesting samples of some demons. Supernaturals were hard to find and even harder to catch, but you didn't get to be a hunter without having cultivated some talents. If she managed to connect with her consciousness... If she managed to get her psyche reconnected with her body....

She locked herself up for months in that disgusting base, hardly sleeping, barely eating, wasting away while everything around her became a blur. Zeta and Doughy began to doubt her, but nothing kept her from her goal. She ran into more closed doors than open ones, and that made her embrace more and more radical ideas. Blood cultures became tests on the patient and then experimental drugs based on a couple of guesses. Her diary became frantic, messy and disturbing.

And yet, she did not hesitate.

She mapped her consciousness while she performed punctures in different parts of her body, analyzing the response to pain and to the mixture of drugs. And she ended up realizing that to certain stimuli her mind seemed to escape from her own body. She thought she had become brain death on as many as three occasions, until her vitals returned to her body without warning.

She realized that the closer she came to death, the stronger her return was afterwards. Desperate to get a result, she prepared a special mixture of barbiturates that would bring the patient to collapse in little more than 5 minutes. The machines beeped around her as she listened to the incoherent babbling of Doughy who tried to grab the body to stop it moving like a puppet. She wanted to scream, to break everything around her to try to silence all that noise.

And then, it stopped. The machine stopped at the same time as the body.

“B-boss..." She already knew what she was going to say before her words left her mouth. “S-she's dead...”

“Leave me alone. “Her voice sounded hoarse from lack of use.

“But b-boss...”

“GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE!!!” She heard his clumsy footsteps walk away in response and only then did she plop down on a stool near her. All her effort lay on that rusty bed. Her fragile little muse had plunged into darkness and with it, the last connection to reality.

She looked at the time. At four minutes resuscitation was considered almost impossible, at ten a miracle, beyond that... simply a utopia. It had been almost forty. She dropped her head on the mattress and clutched the sheets tightly. She didn't cry, but she felt as exhausted as if she had and fell asleep.

Beep...

Beep...

Beep...

Coco blinked a couple of times, looking for the alarm that seemed to be waking her from a rare and uncomfortable sleep, only to find herself face to face with her patient's monitor still attached.

Beep Beep...

Beep Beep...

Beep Beep...

The rhythm seemed to increase and it agitated and disturbed her so much that it suddenly woke her up.

Beep Beep Beep...

It was coming...

Beep beep beep beep...

She couldn't hesitate or she would lose the opportunity forever.

Beep beep beep beep beep...

She slid the rolling stool across the room and grabbed the adrenaline, she was coming back... But how long had it been? Several hours? A whole day? She tapped the needle hard on her chest and drove it into her heart.

The girl's spine arched at an unnatural angle as an unearthly gasp emanated from her chest. Coco's hands were shaking, her whole body trembled, and had she been standing, she would surely have fallen to the ground.

“Y-you're awake...”

Biip biip biip…

Se acercaba…

Biip biip biip biip…

Biip biip biip biip biip…
