The 1902 Ford 999 was built for one purpose: speed. The 999 was designed to capture the land speed record at a time when automobiles were still little more than experimental motorized carriages. Most cars of that era did not even have a 10 horsepower engine. The Ford 999 was brutally primitive, little more than an exposed chassis with no bodywork and an enormous 18.9-liter inline four-cylinder engine, producing an incredible 80 horsepower. With this engine the 999 achieved speeds over 90 mph! To break the land speed record, Henry Ford sacrificed essentially everything. The 999 ran with little to no suspension, meaning the driver absorbed every bump directly through the rigid frame. Steering was handled through a simple wooden tiller, and braking was crude even by early standards, relying on basic rear braking systems that made high-speed control genuinely dangerous. The car cemented its legend in 1904, when famed daredevil Barney Oldfield drove it to an unofficial land speed record of 91.37 mph, making headlines and helping launch Ford into national attention.
Changelog:
Based on historical tire data research, drastically adjusted the tire slip angle to be much more unforgiving. Grip is more peaky and likely to "snap" away from the driver.
Tire performance under braking is worse.
Drastic reduction in baseline tire grip.
Tire load based grip falloff is drastically improved.
Increased tire wear rate.
Increased brakes overheating.
New brake temp performance curve to better match researched band brake performance in early 1900s. Improved cold performance and decreased hot performance.
Increased bumpstop rate drastically, as early 1900s had rigid stops with no isolation.
Revised engine power curve to have more torque in the low end, with a slightly more sudden falloff at "high" rpms.
Increased engine response time.
Heavily reduced poly count by creating 73 new parts.
Improved details by creating 73 new replacement parts.
New textures.
Added LODs.
Added transmission damage code.
Added fuel setup options.
Added front camber setup options.
Added front toe setup options.
Added final drive setup options.
Improved AI.
Revised differential preload.
Softened clutch.
Revised V1900s tire model.
Minor revision to tire wear curve.
New tire temp curve.
Revised CG weight distribution to 70% forward.
Reduced transmission damage threshold.
Added five more basic paint schemes.
