Hey everyone and welcome to a brand new development blog.
Vanilla Events Expanded remake is now slated for release later today. I have finished work on the infographics and I'd like to present them to you in this post.
It was a lot of fun to redesign this old mod. We have really learned a lot, and RimWorld itself has evolved over the years. The mod originally started as a commission from Helixien, back in 2019!
He requested long night and ice age events, and they have survived to this day. Obviously I didn't consider that enough back then, so we also added loads of other events. And in the past few months, I had the opportunity to redesign them, and I can honestly say it was a lot of joy.
I'd like to show you proof how I have grown as a designer. Lets take a look at the original design for the shuttle crash event:
As you can see, it was very... under-designed. I didn't provide any information for the implementing coder.
That is not good. When you leave information to be interpreted by someone else, you lose track of what you're actually adding. How can you ensure that something you're adding works as you intended... if you didn't convey that information to the coder?
Let's now take a look at the new design for the shuttle crash event:
As you can see, the new design is a lot more refined, features a lot more information and ensures that the event is implemented exactly how I want it - and exactly how I think it will work best. Because at the end of the day, it's the job of a designer to imagine how something should work.
Now, I've done the exact same treatment for all of the events in the mod. The original Vanilla Events Expanded design document was 6 pages long. The new one is 43 pages long.
The infographics are done, I'm just waiting for Sarg to merge the repo on Github and we will be proceeding to release. I hope you'll enjoy the remake, and while you wait, browse the infographics!
