There was a time in the late 1990s/early 2000s that TV production companies found that body modification culture was ripe for the pickin' when it came to getting content for the 24 hour cable tv circuit.
TLC, National Geographic, Fox Files- regional, national, and international crews traveled nonstop to film piercing, scarification, and especially body suspension to continue the sideshow tradition of showing something shocking to the rubes for profit.
