Today I wanted to add another creature to my "Slavic Demonology" collection since it hasn't been updated for a long time. This time it will be a Cat Bayun.
Cat Bayun (Russian: Кот Баюн) is a legendary giant cat from Slavic, particularly Russian, folklore, said to dwell among the towering trees of the Siberian forests. Enormously strong and fearsome, Bayun possesses claws capable of tearing through any armor. His mesmerizing voice and gentle songs lull travelers into a magical sleep, a trait reflected in his name, which derives from the Russian verb bayukat (баюкать), meaning "to lull to sleep."
One of the most famous tales featuring Kot Bayun is Godfather Naum, in which Tsar Andrey orders the legendary creature to be captured and brought to his palace. The feat is accomplished only through a powerful counter-spell that puts the enchanted cat to sleep. In many Russian legends, Cat Bayun is also portrayed as Baba Yaga's companion or guardian, a mystical beast that commands wolves and bears alike. According to folklore, men were said to fear and respect Bayun more than women, reinforcing his reputation as one of the most mysterious and formidable creatures of Slavic mythology.
Love, Erinthul.
