This is the Jungle Rubble (40x40), and your variant is swampy! If you'll recall the swamp maps I was making last autumn, this palette is based off of those because the vibe of this one felt similar to me. The presence of palms in a swamp might be a little odd but I only thought of that now so don't shoot me.
This sketch is rough, even for me, but still functional enough. The idea here was that there's a sort of clearing in the jungle where the ground is a bit sunken here and there and among the ponds you'll find some scattered remnants of an old village or temple. Really, I just liked the thought of there being some jungle ruins with ponds in the mix, that's all there is to it sometimes.
I feel like I've been saying it a lot recently, but I got really lost in the outlines this time. You know how a job you've done a hundred times can sometimes feel insurmountable? I started this map with with some trees and rock walls and, when it got time to draw the ruins themselves, my head went blank and I couldn't imagine actually tackling them. Drawing these few scattered rock walls and tile floors was oddly overwhelming, and while I usually try not to blame 'art block' because it feels like a flimsy excuse when I have a job to do and deadlines to meet, it was a bit of an ordeal to get them finished.
Not much motivation this week, I suppose, here's hoping next week is better.
As opposed to the previous jungle maps, I wanted the colors for this one to feel truly 'jungle-y'. The previous few I've been aiming for brighter, more vibrant colors and a more cheerful palette, but something about the concept of this map made that feel a little less appropriate. I think the tone of the scene made me want to lean away from the tropical colors that felt more fitting for the last few, so I gave it more grounded lighting and somewhat more olive green colors all around. It's the vibe of this map, that's all I gotta say about that.
