How to use (and hear) compression, EQ and stereo width control
Hello! Hope you're good.
Here's a new video on the LEQA (Levelling EQ Amplifier) from 4ms. You'll no doubt remember I was asking you to send in audio to run through this and thank you to those that did. As usual with these community audio projects I've dipped back into previous submissions to use as well. So we've a great range of examples and styles covered nicely in this one.
I also really appreciate everyones input on the LEQA that was discussed in our Discord. Many of you wanted me to include or make the video about how to use EQ and compression, what those things are used for and how to hear and understand what they're doing. So more than usual I've tried to share my thoughts, goals and actions in while presenting the module -
Why am I cutting low end? - What am I trying to do reducing the stereo width? - How could compression even out level changes, or bring forward a background FX in a mix?
- I've tried to talk through these things as I go and with the range of examples I hope this is a good start for bringing in what's traditional a set of studio and music production devices into the Eurorack format. Certainly let us know when you've watched the video and if its helpful or raises more questions.
THE SET UP
Here's the system that I used to make the demo. If you have any questions about anything used do let me know. I did swap in Mutable Instruments Rings at one point and the Music Thing Modular Spring Reverb mk2, Befaco Crush Delay and Deuawd phaser from Dwyfor Tech (again if that raises questions and curiosities let us know).
PATREON EXCLUSIVE - MEGA REESE BASS SYNTHESIS
From this video on the LEQA I made what I think is the best Reese bass and bit of a DNB I've made on the modular, at least in recent times. While this was in the LEQA demo, that focused on the use of the LEQA on the drums. So I wanted to take the time to go through the synthesis of the accompanying bass, using FX for width and texture and also the mechanics of play the drum loops in time. You'll find that exclusive video HERE on the post of all exclusive videos.
WHAT'S NEXT
Outside of the new LEQA video there's lots of things in the works as usual. Multiple videos getting pushed around the schedule for various things, so I find myself in a strange moment of not knowing immediately what to jump into and what's coming next. But it won't be long before the next of many things to come, we're far from twiddling thumbs juggling a load of things here! :) see you in the Discord.
