DESCRIPTION

MattsAwesomeStuff explains: The reason you can't find quality DIY videos on Youtube anymore is because the highest priority to Youtube is PLATFORM RETENTION. The algorithm will prioritize, ABOVE ALL ELSE, to avoid giving anyone the video that has shown to make others leaves the platform. This is fundamentally at odds with DIY videos, because what do we do when we find the information we were looking for? WE GET OFF OF YOUTUBE AND GO DO THE TASK.

So Youtube will NEVER show you the video that solves your problem or answers your question. But do you know which videos are perfect from the algorithm's perspective? The ones that GUARANTEE you do not leave the platform after you watch the video. Which are those? THE USELESS ONES. The ones that you clicked on the most reliably (clickbait) and delivered the content most poorly. 12 minutes about talking about what they're going to do, and then it skips the critical thing you need shown, spends a lot of time on the platform and answers nothing? Perfect. Especially when you're on a mission to find a piece of info, bad videos are elevated even higher because you have to keep looking after you've watched them. Content-dense, effective, clear, concise, perfectly-explained tutorials are murder to the retention metric. Long-winded, rambling, bad camera work, bold claims you click on and never deliver will string you along for 2 or 3 hours one after the other, each only maybe answering 10% of what you need, instead of 6 minutes of it compacted together.

This isn't sinister, it's just a very sinister side effect of Youtube not wanting to lose audience to TicToc, Facebook, Netflix, etc. Good tutorials are the worst possible sign, bad tutorials are the best possible sign.
