Cherry blossom horseshoe crab 🌸

Where I live, cherry blossoms started blooming about a week ago.

Whenever spring comes and flowers bloom, I feel like drawing them. That’s probably why I always seem to draw flower pictures during this season.

They just started blooming last week, reached full bloom over the weekend, and as I walked down the street this week, it felt like flower petals were falling like rain.

I tend to go on a picnic or visit famous flower spots every year this time if possible, but I couldn't really enjoy the flowers this month because I caught a bad cold 🤒 Still, I was able to see flowers blooming on the street on my way to pick up my cold medicine. That actually makes me imagine flowers even more.

I thought about Pom-Pom Crabs!

This crab actually exists, and for those who don't know, I am sharing a link to a short documentary video about them 🦀 Youtube link : This crab has a jealous rival | Parenthood - BBC

These are simple idea doodles and character designs before drawing.

I’m going to have them hold cherry blossoms instead of anemones.

Although they don’t have the stinging venom of anemones, the setting is that crabs are safe even without anemones because other fish also want to look at the flowers.

I made the face pattern like a blush on the cheeks and the back pattern like a flower.

In first sketch, it had large eyes like this, but I spontaneously changed the face during the drawing process. As a result, it ended up having quite a different feel.

Pink will definitely give off a spring vibe, and blue will likely give off an underwater feeling.

I agonized over which color to use until the very last moment.

Initially, I was thinking of blue, but while I was working on this picture, I drew a horseshoe crab and chose a blue background. I still like blue, but since I had already used it in another drawing and wanted to give it a calmer, pastel feel this time, I decided on the center.

I could draw more pictures in this series, or I could just stop here.

I wanted to draw more flowers and crustaceans. (Oh, by the way, the horseshoe crab I drew earlier isn't a crustacean, though!)

One is about cherry shrimp and cherry blossoms, and here is the rough sketch.

Another one is the Cubarius isopod. I learned about this morph a while ago when I was drawing Cubarius isopods; there are varieties named Cherry Blossom and Sakura.

Thank you! I will update the wallpaper this week.
