I drew 40 corn snakes!

It was another project that took quite a while since Bee, and while it was tough while I was drawing, I felt really proud when it was finished.

Snakes are still difficult animals to draw, but since I've drawn them more and more, I think I understand a little bit about how to draw them now. It’s really nice to have more animals that I can draw comfortably 😚

I completed them in four batches of 10.

These are the four completed files. I combined them into one and performed the final editing.

I arranged the snakes to ensure the colors were distributed as evenly as possible when merging them into a single image.

In the very beginning, I focused on drawing normal ones and then basic single morphs.

It was easier to understand if I knew the base morph.

For example, Butter is Amelanistic + Caramel.

Since I drew Amelanistic and Caramel first, it was easier to understand the characteristics when drawing Butter.

Because corn snakes are commonly kept as pets, there was plenty of reference material available, but it was a bit difficult to judge their exact color by photo. This is because a snake's color can look different depending on the light, and their color or pattern can change as they age. There are also individual differences between snakes.

Their morph names also helped me visualize the colors. Just as the colors of caramel and butter differ even though they are all yellow snakes... I have drawn various animal morphs so far, but it feels like snake morphs, in particular, have many names derived from food and I really like this point.

I have a reference folder for every single drawing (excluding simple doodles). Lately, I’ve been collecting various photo references into a single image file and noting down details such as features, colors, and sizes as thoroughly as possible. It takes a little more time, but I can learn and it’s also really helpful to look back on them later when my memories start to fade.

There are many websites with well-organized information on corn snake morphs, which was really helpful. When I first started looking for corn snake references, there were so many snakes that looked similar to each other, so I needed to figure out their detailed differences when drawing them.... Not only the body color and pattern, but also the belly pattern and eye color differ. And they are all really beautiful.

Some of you might have noticed that the color of the snake names changed during the drawing process... It's kind of like a checklist. When I draw too many different types at the same time, it can be confusing to tell which ones I've finished and which I haven't. (Or maybe it's just because I'm getting older 😂 I was quite confident in my memory, but I'm forgetting or making mistakes more and more often. ) Doing it this way, I clearly see what I haven't finished and what I have.

Well~ even checking like this isn't really enough.... Usually, artists only discover something they missed in their paintings after they finish them ... after uploading to social media. We need a word for that phenomenon. 🧐

I placed the finished snakes next, to use as references when drawing similar snakes, so I could draw them still similar but differently.

Both Opal and Blizzard are white snakes. When I just looked at photos, I couldn't really tell the difference, so I read comparison posts from other people on blogs and communities. I saw explanations that Blizzard is a cool-toned white, while Opal is a warm-toned white. After hearing those explanations, Opal seemed to have a slightly yellowish and pinkish tint. So, I drew it based on that. Their belly glowed softly with various lights, and I could see why their name was Opal.

Bubblegum is a selectively bred Snow Corn Snake, so I made it to have more pink and green tones.

I really like palmetto snakes, so I drew three of them. The caramel and anery palmetto were also really pretty.

Personally, I thought this snake had really pretty colors. I've said this many times, but I really love that snake morph names are full of edible things. Caramel, peppermint, candy cane, bubblegum, creamsicle, honey...

Scaleless is really impressive. I've seen a lot of photos of related morphs, and all the patterns look incredibly soft, like watercolors... I tried to capture that softness, but it doesn't seem to show up well now that I've reduced the image size 😂

I paid a lot of attention to the shape to capture the cute, pretty, and especially soft feeling of this snake ✍️
