Patient Plants as Ferocious as Any Predator
Of the many verdant creatures that inhabit this world, few are as proactive as an auger maw when it comes to acquiring food. Armed with a plethora of natural armaments that seem to echo both flora and fauna, this wandering stalker sustains itself on a purely carnivorous diet. Many adventurers have fallen to the snapping jaws and biting acid of a maw, carried screaming beneath the earth.
Underground Stalkers. Uniquely adapted to tunnel through earth and stone, an auger maw rarely strikes unless it has the element of surprise on its side. After luring in its prey, it bursts from the ground and seizes the opportunity to capture as much food as it can before retreating. Many souls have been lost to an auger maw’s hunting, disappearing without a trace.
Animalistic Drive. Despite what its tendency to wait for unsuspecting prey to approach it may imply, auger maws have more in common with carnivorous animals than their plant cousins. With vines that coil like tightly wound muscles and a cavernous mouth that snaps at any unfortunate enough to encounter this beast, one would be forgiven for mistaking an auger maw for a flesh and blood predator instead of a plant.
The first thing to catch your eyes after you come to your senses is a bloom of verdant jaws that open and chitter with an irregular rhythm, exposing the scarlet interior beneath the hulking mass. Then you notice its rippling musculature, if it could be called that; vines pulled taught across a mighty form, prepared to spring at any moment. Finally, and most concerningly, you see the earth around the gaping maw shift and crack as it lunges towards you, jaws agape. You’ve walked right into its trap.
