DESCRIPTION

This is the updated version of the Cuicacalli illustration from last month.

The reason why I redrew this drawing is simple: I didn't like it. I was unsatisfied about how I incorporated two different sources in the previous version: Duran's description about the cuicacalli and the Codex Florentine's description about the festival of Huey Tecuilhuitl. Although the main character's costume was for the ritual dance, the drawing itself shows a typical day of ahuianime meeting with the warriors.

The aspect that I disliked the most was Xochimazatl. He had to be drawn with a different rank and hairdo because I couldn't decipher the source, which irritated me greatly. It also further convoluted the whole drawing. Characters are dressed in festive costumes, but the circumstance in the drawing is not festive, AND the setting is three years ago, thus Xochimazatl's appearance is completely different. It felt like too much deviation that warranted explanations.

Therefore, I drew the main characters in their regular costume this time. The ahuianime are wearing makeup, while Xochimazatl has a standard tilmatli and temilotl haircut. However, the fancy huipil and skirts remain the same, as it was the entire point of the drawing. Although it is mentioned in a festive context in the Codex Florentine, it is still an huipil and cueitl, which are typical female clothing at the time. So, I thought it is not totally impossible that some high-ranking ahuianime might've worn them outside of the rituals.

I might post this current version on social media. Do you guys prefer this, or the previous one?
